52 Family Gardening Activities - Chronicle Books
Harvest herbs like mint, chives, or lavender on a sunny windowsill. Ideally, your spot will get at least 6 hours of sunlight daily, but you can also use plant lighting if your home lacks sufficient natural light. Once you start seeing new growth, trim your herbs—they’re ready for use. Let your family try each herb (say, basil) with a dish that highlights it (like pesto). Maybe you’ll be able to add a homegrown dish to your dinner rotation.
Save the pit from your next avocado, let it dry out for a few days, then suspend the pit in a jar of water by inserting 3 or 4 toothpicks around its midline. Eventually, you’ll have a root and a sprout growing. Once the sprout is about 6 inches (15 centimetres) tall, it’s ready to be potted. You’ll have to wait as long as 13 years for the tree to bear fruit, but in the meantime, the whole family can observe a plant’s life cycle in real time.
