Sono nato in una cittadina dell'Italia settentrionale, e lì ho iniziato a occuparmi di una delle mie tante attività preferite: viaggiare. Ma non mi ci sono dedicato sul serio prima di compiere quindici anni, quando mi sono messo a girare in motorino sulle stradine di campagna della pianura padana, immaginando di essere nelle steppe dell'Asia Centrale o nelle praterie del Midwest americano, anziché tra i campi di barbabietole dell'Emilia Romagna. Un po' più cresciuto, sono passato ai raid in bicicletta, in Ungheria e lungo il crinale dell'Appennino. Raid che documentavo con una vecchia fotocamera Zenit comprata usata da un venditore ambulante, poi sono passato a Minolta e al digitale con Canon. Intanto suonavo il sassofono e facevo immersioni nella barriera corallina. Ancora più cresciuto, ho avuto la fortuna di trovare una compagna che non riesce a stare ferma, come me, e via così in quasi tutta l'Europa, in India, America nord e sud, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Marocco, ecc., fino a stabilirci per 3 anni in Sudafrica, dove ho realizzato la maggior parte delle immagini che ho raccolto nei miei libri.

Follow the star

One day some time ago, this girl – who did not know yet that she would become the girl who is afraid of nothing -, after washing the dishes and sweeping the floor, looked at her husband, who had fallen asleep on the sofa after a lunch with rather heavy food and red wine. It was Sunday, and she would have liked to get out for a walk in the countryside, but the days were already getting shorter, and her husband did not look much eager to raise from the sofa. Instead, his breath suggested that in the evening he would relocate directly from the sofa to the bed.

The girl thought for a little while, then decided to go out on her own without hesitating. She did not want to walk alone in the countryside at twilight, although there were no dangers at all in that really quiet town. Moreover she did not want her husband to wake up at dusk and get worried because she was not safe at home. As she was used to do, she put strong trekking boots on her feet and took a small backpack, that she stuffed with a couple of sweaters, a pair of trousers, a hat and a light jacket, besides her indispensable bottle of still water. It was still quite warm, so she put on a pair of shorts and a light jumper, and sneaked silently out of home into the street.

The girl walked quickly through the town outskirts, and took a country road where she used to hike with her husband. That road did not take to any particularly remarkable or worth visiting place, it was just nearly traffic free, with a good unpaved but seldom muddy surface, and the wide landscape around was really relaxing. On that day there was almost nobody else to enjoy the beautiful landscape, and the girl was happy to be hiking there, and to daydream while she watched the country. It was a beautiful day, and only towards sunset some clouds began to gather in the sky, but at that moment the girl had already started to walk towards home.

However she decided to take a slightly longer way home, in order to walk across a neighborhood where she and her husband were seldom going, and therefore knew very little. So she had to take another country road, that would bring her to this new neighborhood. At least that was her intention, but after a while she realizes that she has been walking for too long, and there is no neighborhood on sight. Instead, what she feared is occurring: the sunset is gone, dark clouds have filled the sky, and she is walking alone at dusk. Moreover, she does not know where she is going to.

She can see neither houses or lights around, and she has not been meeting any other hiker for long. It seems to her that many hours have passed, and her husband will be worried for sure. She searches her smartphone into the backpack, without finding it, so she takes everything out from the backpack and puts it on the roadside. But there is no smartphone. She forgot it somewhere at
