    Chapter One

I really don’t know why I agree to these stupid things and get myself involved in situations I can’t get out of. This time it’s a four-day weekend from hell! After months of my best friend pestering and begging me, I finally backed down and agreed to this. The promise of good live music and alcohol definitely helped sway my bad decision. I can still hear her voice in my head every time I think about letting my guard down and now, I’m second-guessing my decision.

But you love camping, she said happily. Camping is your happy place, she’d whine.

My reply would always be the same. I know it is, but I like peaceful camping and not fields full of drunk motor car racing enthusiasts.

    Come on, pleaseeee... she begged.

And that’s how it was for at least two months before I gave in, in the hopes she’d stop begging and leave me alone, or maybe just maybe she’d find someone who likes the racing world to take instead of me.

But, no, unfortunately my prayers weren’t answered and here I am, in a field, near some racetrack that I can't remember the name of. I keep giving myself a pep talk about supporting my best friend and helping her fulfil one of her dreams.

This racing weekend for Zoe has been on her bucket list for years. She’s had a love for racing ever since she was a little girl and watching televised racing with her dad. Her dad used to drive in these weekend semi pro leagues, but he retired from racing years ago. Unfortunately, not long after that, he passed away suddenly. Zoe was still young when he died, but she never lost her love for motorsports and remembers the stories he used to tell her. We don’t talk about him much, but I know this means the world to her, and I’ll do anything for my best friend's happiness, even though I took a bit of convincing. I can be very stubborn and don’t like stepping out of my comfort zone, and as much as I love Zoe, I hope she knows she’s got to pay me back one day.

We’ve come down to the site the night before my living hell starts. Zoe claimed it was to grab a good camping spot. I also think it’s so I get one peaceful night's sleep before the shenanigans start tomorrow. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the pending doom, I'd be smiling like a Cheshire cat. She was right about one thing, we managed to get the perfect camping spot. Close to the amenities but not too close to the smell, and it’s what we agreed would be a good people-watching spot.

Zoe’s car and my tent are backed up against a dry-stone wall overlooking the flat fields that lay before us, with woodlands and hills on the horizon and to each side. It's a beautiful part of our country, and to my surprise, we haven’t seen many other people. Thankfully. And even better, I haven’t heard a car engine rev or seen a boy or girl racer. Zoe promises me it's a family event, and it is not full of dickheads that think they are the next big thing or a Colin McRae wannabe. I’ve no idea who that is, but Zoe says he’s a racing legend.

Keely, you ok? Zoe asks, making me jump as I
