What are you doing for Valentine’s Day? Krista asked her roommate.

Ainsley sighed. Nothing, she grumbled. Who would I do something with anyway?

Krista shrugged. I don’t know. What about that cute guy in your psych class?

Jared? He doesn’t even know I exist.

Hm, Krista thought. I swore I saw a cute guy staring at you in the cafeteria the other day.

    Who? Ainsley asked.

He had curly brown hair. Tall. Seemed pretty muscular. Cute.

Oh that narrows it down, Ainsley said sarcastically. She sighed again, realizing she was being rude to her roommate for no reason. It’s not a big deal. You can stop trying to make me feel better.

Krista gave her roommate a sympathetic smile. You never know. Maybe someone will ask you out.

Ha! Fat chance, Ainsley’s edge was back. She couldn’t help it. Her boyfriend for the past two years broke up with her the week before. Just a week before Valentine’s Day. Figures. It was lame and they both knew it. The restaurant. Not the fight. The fight was warranted. In fact, Ainsley was surprised, if not disappointed in herself, that she stayed with Greg another year after that. And that she let him break up with her. Dump her was more like it. For a cute freshman, no less.

You wanna join me for dinner? Krista asked. I’m heading down to the cafeteria. Maybe that cute guy will be there.

Nah, I’m not hungry yet. I’ll grab something from the Quick Mart later.

Ok. Krista walked out of their dorm room and shut the door behind her.

Ainsley slumped on her bed. She wished she wasn’t in such a bad mood about Valentine’s Day. It wasn’t that she hated the holiday. Commercial as it was. She just never had anyone make the day special for her. At twenty-one years old, she was old enough to realize it wasn’t that big of a deal. But after watching pretty much all of her friends through high school and college have their boyfriends make a huge deal out of the day,
