Since no love story is repeated, but always new ones are created, the author wants to tell of lovers, whose affection and connectedness leads them into exciting encounters that can be dangerous or even devastating, but also sad and beautiful, poignant and funny, also creative. As the darkness gave way to the light,

    the people became aware

that there is a star for every soul

    that connects souls and hearts

    with each other.

That it turns the small into the big.

And in the consciousness of this size,

humility, joy, and infinite love came

    to the people.

And with that they again became

    the divine beings

    they had not remembered before.

    Introduction

Is it really possible to say anything about love that has not yet been said? Didn’t media and literature described it in all variants and facets?

Anyone who believes that overlooks the fact that love stories do not repeat themselves but that other, new ones will always take place.

Science knows little about love, and poetry knows much more about it, but what we learn most is when we ask the lovers ourselves. Because from them we experience, feel, and suffer. The answers are varied, even many thousands of times.

Love breaks hearts, they say. But I believe that love is the only force in the universe that grows when you share it, and it heals hearts.

But what has power to break hearts is what we call relationships, because this created arrangement can become a surrogate, a substitute for love. Relationships often become an alliance between partners where taking is more blessed than giving.

Love is experienced in the essential unity with the partner. But in doing so, the self is risking losing itself. Without this risk, this willingness to lose, it remains separated from everything, even from itself.

Anger, pain, and suffering are part of love, even happy love. Those who want to avoid this will not get to know the fullness of love. But those who bravely and openly plunge into this greatest adventure of life are richly gifted, because every love experience is a way to themselves, to self-love, because it seems to be all about this one and only great love.

That is why I would like to tell you about lovers whose affection and connection led them into exciting events that could have a dangerous or even devastating—but also sad and beautiful, poignant, funny, and creative—effect.

    A Fairy Tale, First Part

GRANDMA, A FAIRY TALE, PLEASE! The twins looked at her with bright eyes. They sat in the big hall in front of the fireplace in which the fire crackled. The winter storm wailed outside.

Elsah thought it over. "Hmm, today I’ll tell you a true story.

Once upon a time a long time ago, there was a great king called Arktus the Wise. He ruled his empire in benevolence and circumspection. His wife, Sabeh, gave birth to a son. They called him Lothair. And then they had a daughter; Rhea was her name. Lothair loved his younger sister more than everything, and Rhea adored her older brother very much. They were almost like twins.

King Arktus the Wise put a lot of weight on the education of his heir to the throne. He sent Lothair to the best teachers and taught him everything he knew with respect to art of warfare and governance. The younger sister pressured her brother to teach her everything within the few free hours the brothers and sister shared. She wanted to be able to fight like him and wanted to learn everything about ruling. She was bored by the courtly life with the silly ladies’ maids and ladies-in-waiting. She preferred to roam through the woods with her brother and go hunting with him. However, he preferred to ride to their secret rock. They spent many hours together on the horizontal branch of the gnarled oak tree there. Rhea asked her brother endless questions. He patiently told her everything he knew. Then they leaned against each other in silence and looked in the distance, or they practiced sword fighting in front of the oak.

One day at the break of the dawn, a swarm of ravens began cawing and then quickly fluttered away. Rhea and Lothair prepared to ride back to the castle. Suddenly everything was dipped in a milky light, and the horses stood rooted to the spot without making a sound.

A female figure wrapped up in a crimson cape appeared in front of them. She pushed the hood back. Her golden hair flowed out in waves. Her noble face appeared as she raised the head. Only a long scar on her right cheek clouded her beauty a little. She raised her left hand, and the diamond in it began to shine in the same blue light as her exceptionally big eyes until her whole shape was surrounded by it.

I am Inanna, guardian of this place, she began. Her voice sounded gentle and firm at the same time. I’ve been watching you for a while. You will not be able to return to this place for a long time. But one day, both of you will come back. Then I’ll be there too, if you call me! I tell you, Lothair: rule wisely, and you will be a more powerful king. You should always think of what your father taught you. Above all, think of benevolence. Rhea, you will become a powerful wife at the side of a tall duke, but you never should forget your brother! She turned left and disappeared. The two looked at each other for a long time with big eyes. Then they rode home in silence.

They didn’t have the slightest idea when or how they would return to this place. Neither know that Inanna could see them whenever she wanted, through the eyes of others and of animals. She also could talk to them through the mouths of others.

Arktus the Wise and his wife, Sabeh, had given a lot of thought to which duke’s daughter their son should marry and which knight Rhea should marry. Between the kingdom and the different dukedoms, many heralds rode back and forth. Contracts were sealed concerning the young people. Soon a great court day would take place with knight tournament, during which two weddings would be announced.

Near the Arktus empire lay the duchy of Okar the Strict. Arktus the Wise and Okar the Strict respected each other. However, they were not good neighbors or even friends. They left each other alone.

Okar had a daughter, Larah. He loved his daughter, but he ardently wanted to have a son. When Larah was growing up, her mother died while giving birth to a son. The child died with her. Okar was very sad and furious. Larah became very lonesome. She missed her mother painfully because she had been so gentle and patient.

Soon Okar decided something unusual: Larah should take over the inheritance and become duchess. First she refused her father because he wanted her to learn to fight as a knight too. But eventually she complied because she recognized only she could protect her father from getting even more irascible and becoming completely embittered.

She studied fast, and she studied everything! She was beautiful, clever, and aggressive. Her father was proud of her.

When was exhausted, she often thought, Why must I learn fighting too? Why can’t I simply become only a duchess? I’m not strong enough for this double task. If only Mother were still here. I would like to be like her! But fortunately there is Ammah!

Ammah lived at the court and was a wisely old woman. She was Larah’s lady’s maid, but not only that. She taught Larah to listen to her inner voice, to understand the roaring of the wind, and to pay attention to the ravens. She taught her how to mix healing herbal juices, sharpen her senses, and see through other people. This was pure magic to Larah! Ammah was the only one Larah trusted.

One day when Ammah was fixing Larah’s wild auburn hair, as she often did, she said, If you find love, always keep it in your heart. Never let it go! She then left the bedchamber.

Larah looked after her, confused. She was different today—and her voice! She acted that way only when she taught Larah sacred things.

Soon a knight tournament should take place in the neighbor monarchy. Okar the Strict and Larah would ride there. Larah often appeared with her father before the people. She was soon called Larah the Beautiful. This reputation quickly spread across the borders.

Lothair looked forward to the tournament. I’ve gotten so strong. I’m courageous and skillful with the sword, and also with the word! I want to become a dignified heir to the throne. Everyone will know me as Lothair, son of Arktus and future king! My falcon follows me by word, and I know each of his cries. He is a loyal and important companion. And
