Kerry Swan is a recovering hard-arse project manager. After spending more than 20 years in the trenches learning the logical rules of leadership, Kerry's life changed the day her best friend Sandy held up a mirror and said, 'What's up your arse?' and 'Why does it matter so much?' This began Kerry's quest to find a more authentic approach to leadership, which she shares in this book.

About the author
Introduction
When I started writing this book, I thought it was going to be easy. Heartfelt Leader ship was going to be a book about leader ship for women. Strong, smart women. Women who are leaders, but who, like you, are looking for something more.
But then I realised that this book is also about men. Empathetic, strategic men. Men who know there must be a better way to lead. Men who, like you, can feel the difference between effective and unproductive leader ship. So Heartfelt Leader ship became a practical book. A book that’s equally important for the blokes.
This book is not about how women are better at support than men. And, it’s not a book about blokes being better at outcomes. This book is about balance and, most importantly, courage – because it takes courage and a deep sense of balance to be a heartfelt leader.
When Viktor Frankl, Holocaust survivor, psychologist and author, wrote his book Man’s Search for Meaning, he did not distinguish between men and women; but rather focused on the courageous choices they made. Courageous choices about self- determination and personal leader ship in the most trying of conditions.
And, when Brené Brown, university researcher and author, embarked on her career exploring courage, vulnerability and shame, she did not distinguish between men and women in her work; instead, she chose discomfort over control.
While working as a coach, entrepreneur and leader, I have learned that leader ship, especially personal leader ship, requires daily doses of courage. You need to check in both with your heart and your head, make the big decisions, make the right decisions and then leap into action.
THE TROUBLE WITH LEADER SHIP
Along your journey, you might have noticed that the leader ship style that you have adopted is not getting the results you want. You may have found that hard logic and results are features of your adopted leader ship style. Likely, this style doesn’t feel empathetic or kind to the people around you.
Or perhaps you have found that you still have issues with your team, no matter what you do or how nice and patient you are. You are not getting the traction you need to deliver results.
In my experience, this kind of discovery starts around the middle of your career. You begin to question your leader ship life with its endless list of tasks, people and problems to deal with. Or, more specifically, you may be struggling with things like:
getting your team members to do what you want while still having a good relationship with them
identifying the best strategic approach or solution to a particular business problem
the existential questions that arise mid-career, such as, ‘Is this what I want to be doing? Or, if I want to be doing something different, am I brave enough to make that jump?’
You might have even attended some training or some professional development along the way to try to ‘fix yourself’.
If you, like my clients, are asking yourself these questions, know this: you can think more deeply about your approach to leader ship, and you can change.
I would go as far as to ask you if, in your current leader ship approach, you are being true to yourself? Indeed, it is these types of questions that signal you are ready to consciously start creating the leader you want to be.
I hope that Heartfelt Leader ship will help you to choose a more balanced approach to leader ship. Because heartfelt leader ship is about two things: fixing work, people and team problems, and then understanding the deeper reasons why you have the issues in the first place.
Heartfelt Leader ship will teach you how to lead others and lead them the way they want to be led.
Heartfelt Leader ship will also help you get clear about what you want in your life. It will help you manage and embrace times of chaos. Adopting heartfelt leader ship will set you and your team up for high levels of accountability and teach you the importance of difficult conversations. You will understand the language of heartfelt leaders and focus on the brevity of life to make sure that your legacy lives on.
WHO AM I?
I am Kerry Swan. I am a recovering hard-arse, a project manager by trade and a lifelong achiever.
Along my journey, I transitioned from a sensitive and creative child to a young woman who believed in the dream: the dream that I could have it all. The dream that I could have it all, as long as I played by the masculine rules of leader ship. These were the rules in the 1980s workplace that included winning at all costs; rules that rewarded outcomes and results; and rules that meant you had to be tough. Rules that meant that my focus became tasks and getting things done to become a leader.
Later, when I was a single mum, these rules were further enforced by the patriarchy. I had something to prove, and I wanted to prove that I could do it all. I could be the protector, the provider, the nurturer and the support all rolled into one. These were the years of no mercy and getting the job done at all costs.
Luckily for me, around seven years ago, my great mate Sandy held up a mirror and asked me who I was. (I’ll tell you the full story of her intervention in principle 3.) She also asked me ‘Why?’ Why was I on a relentless quest to be right and to win at all costs? And, why did it matter so much? At this moment, my transition to a heartfelt leader began. It’s a journey that I’ve lived while writing this book.
My entrepreneurial and creative streak fights for attention with my known and well-worn command-and-control skill set these days. It is a battle that I struggle with – every day.
Thankfully, writing this book has set me free.
It has set me free to find the courage to be a heartfelt leader.
These days, I am on a quest to find a more authentic approach to leader ship and find the right skills for now.
But my journey in heartfelt leader ship is a work-in-progress, and yours will be too. Being a heartfelt leader is not about getting there, hitting the goal and reaching the milestone – it is about the journey. That’s the difference between heartfelt leaders and the rest. We celebrate the journey.
A HEARTFELT LEADER SHIP MODEL
Have you naturally drifted into leader ship rather than it being a goal you aimed for? Perhaps you are a leader because you are good at your job? Or maybe you have a knack for convincing other people to follow you? Either way, many of us become leaders without a whole lot of conscious choice. It just happens.
As a leader, you might have adopted the leader ship principles of the people who have led you. Perhaps you haven’t given much thought to whether those principles are relevant to you. Or perhaps those adopted principles don’t feel right anymore.
For too long, the world has adopted a masculine approach to leader ship – leader ship that is heavy on logic, mathematics and results. The heartfelt leader ship model challenges this approach and proposes that if you want to lead people and projects
