Chapter 1
Elroy Sandy prayed beside his bed. The tall, thin caramel complexion seventeen year old took his Christianity seriously. His parents were in the front master bedroom. Older sister, Bria, was in her dorm at Villanova University. The young man finished praying and tucked himself in bed. Amen,
he said after what he thought would be a restful night. Elroy, blessed with good hearing, picked up the chimes rattling on the family’s front door. The teen heard his usually tame German Shepherd, Biff, running through the house. This was a bit unusual. Elroy got up and headed down the steps. The steps creaked in the old, brick-laden home. Elroy then heard a big thump noise.
Biff, is that you making all this commotion?
His eyes widened and his heart raced. The dog always responded when called. Elroy cut the lights on as Biff started barking uncontrollably. The dog was back in the shed kitchen area. Elroy quickly went to the dog. Hey boy, what’s going on? Someone out there?
Elroy said patting the Shepherd on his head.
The door was secure. He looked out seeing no intruder lurking. He looked over to his neighbor’s home, the Clarks. A man appeared to have been walking between both houses in the alleyway which was quite normal. The locals would take the alley as a shortcut through the back. Movement from upstairs could be heard. Elroy’s parents were awoken by the commotion. Biff then stood on his hind legs and looked out onto the backyard. Elroy went and gathered the flashlight. The German Shepherd scratched and sniffed at the outer door as if something or somebody was out there. Hey boy, settle down. We’re going to investigate what’s making you so hyper tonight.
Elroy opened the back door looking around the yard. There appeared to be movement over towards their neighbors, the Clarks’ home.
His father, David, made it to the shed area. Elroy, what’s all that noise I’m hearing? What’s going on with Biff tonight?
I don’t know. I did my devotions and laid down. I was hearing Biff running back and forth… and the front door chimes. When I came down he was barking his head off in the shed. I did notice he threw up a little of his food in the kitchen. I did think I saw something or somebody moving near the Clarks’ home,
Elroy explained.
Could it have been Mr. Clark?
David asked.
Again Dad, I couldn’t make out what it was. I grabbed the flashlight to go out with Biff then I thought twice about doing that.
Wise decision Son. Your mother and I were upstairs in bed. If it was some kind of prowler out there you would’ve put us at risk by opening our home up. I don’t see anything threatening. After you clean up Biff’s accident, try to get some rest. You have school in the morning,
David said.
Elroy mopped up and Biff calmed down. Maybe it was nothing or nobody out there. But, maybe it was.
The Sandy family had moved into the single home on Greene Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ten years ago. The Pastor of their church, Dale Brown (Bethel Deliverance Church) hadn’t had the opportunity to anoint the home upon the family’s arrival. David, his wife Terry, and the two children were Christians. However, Elroy, for whatever reasons, stayed consistently steadfast in church attendance and his relationship with the Lord. He made breakfast for his parents and himself and then hustled out for school. He had an eight o’clock class at Central High School. The teen also worked part-time at the popular fast food burger joint.
He left for School. His father came down. David ate his breakfast and realized his dining room was cooler than usual. The window was opened. He was perplexed. David remembered Elroy mentioned hearing the front door chimes during the night which may have tilted Biff into his barking episode. David got up and went into the backyard. His dining room window could be accessed by an intruder. After looking, nothing looked out of place. David chalked up the night’s incident as a fluke. He went to his law office where he specialized in divorce.
Terry, a Registered Nurse, worked sporadically at a nursing agency. She liked it that way. Terry cut back her full-time duties while raising her children. However, her youngest was applying for college admittance. She cut up fresh strawberries and did some vacuuming. A small black spider worked its way into the home and headed towards Biff’s head. Thankfully the noise of the vacuum in which the dog hated alerted him to move before the insect put venom atop the canine’s head. He did a spin in the living room. Biffy, don’t attack the vacuum cleaner. I’m cutting it off.
She walked the dog to the backyard, letting him out. A crisp November day, Biffy, don’t you love it?
she said as the dog’s tail swayed back and forth. Terry walked back through the kitchen, her right foot almost squashing the dangerous black spider. Terry gathered a hamper full of colored clothes and put them in the wash. She noticed a man in a shirt and tie standing in back of their neighbors, the Clarks, back steps. Maybe it was some kind of insurance agent she reasoned.
While drying clothes, Terry left the home heading to the mall to pick out another pair of earrings. Terry’s weakness was shopping. Materialistic acquisitions had hampered her concentration on prayer and worship. Although a Christian and believer, she had a worldly desire for possessions. Her heart was in the right place, but Terry’s mind was occupied. Psalms 23:3 says, He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
What many would view as pure shopping fun, was unconsciously leading Terry away from worship. Non-worship empowers Satan.
David, forgetting Elroy’s work schedule, picked him up after school. His job at Burgers on Broad Street was only four blocks away. "Dad, thanks for picking me up, but I’m working at Burgers."
Oh, I forgot. Well, I can save you a four-block walk.
Elroy got in. Dad, Reverend Brown wanted me to tell you and Mom he misses your attendance. Pastor wanted me to read this to you,
he said, pulling out a cue card. 2 Peter 1:5 And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to virtue, knowledge.
David took in the scripture his boy had just read to him. He pulled over the car. Elroy, I have no excuses for missing church. I can’t blame it on being busy with work. With me it comes down to pure laziness. Not wanting to get out of bed early on Sunday morning. But, that’s not an excuse either. The Saturday 5 pm service is available I know. Sometimes a person gets complacent with the true meaning of life. I have faith, so I’ll make the Kingdom of Heaven my first priority again. You’ll see Elroy.
Chapter 2
David dropped off his son. He doubled back to his office to retrieve some court documents. His receptionist, Lana, was still there. She was tall, attractive and golden brown. Lana was also single, unsaved, and made a gesture or two toward her boss that most would consider forward. As soon as David returned to the office, Lana walked up in his space with a big smile. David, I’m so glad to see you again. I have everything typed out for you,
she said, winking at him. David felt a bit uneasy. His stomach filled with nervous anxiety. A part of him felt flattered and another part of him knew it was wrong. It’s hard to combat the devil when you become distant from God. He turned away from her quickly. He voiced a scripture from Luke 4:8 Get thee behind me Satan: for it is written, thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. He went into his office; Lana stood there smiling.
I must say David, you’re looking quite dapper today," Lana added. David took a deep breath to gather his thoughts briefly.
Thank you,
he said, hoping she would settle down. Before David could figure out how to curb his secretary’s obvious lusting tendency, Lana cut off his thought process. She stood in his doorway in her tight one piece sweater.
I’m curious, David. I often wondered why a God fearing man like yourself works in the area of divorce. You ever get conflicted? Now I’m not judging. I’m not a Christian woman. I’m too impulsive to be a disciplined woman of faith. Maybe one day,
she said, moving towards him.
He moved backwards from her close quarters. Lana, my profession is my profession. I’ve established myself as a good lawyer who happens to work in the area of divorce. It hasn’t hurt my faith in God. To be honest with you, I’m becoming a bit uncomfortable with your behavior recently. You’re here to do a job and not anything else,
David remarked.
David, are you referring to the little pecks on the cheek I gave you a few times?
she inquired.
Well, yes. Things like that have to stop. This office has to always stay professional.
I know my actions are flirtatious, but it’s because you’re so handsome and my prince hasn’t showed up in my life. Some women get lucky. Your wife, Terry, for instance, is lucky,
Lana finished.
Lana, I love my wife. Nothing will ever transpire between you and me.
I can accept that. But if you want to be truly fair, you’ll admit one thing. You’ll admit you get weak also. You’re human, David. I’ve seen you watch me walk away from you on many occasions. That’s something a good woman notices. I still believe I’m a good woman, David,
she said, handing him the last of her typed up court documents. David knew he had looked at his secretary previously. Matthew 5:28 says But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh at a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
David left his office.
Elroy worked his four hours at Burgers. Terry was home preparing meatloaf, string beans and rice. Biff laid near her feet as she took in the news.
Pennsylvania had a new governor. His name was Thomas Russell. He won the election in a landslide. Always smiling, shaking hands, the majority voted him in. Many Christians casted votes for the new governor. He used his faith in God to garner hundreds of thousands of supporters. His only negative press was a
