Help Me Prepare - John Paul Girardi

Welcome To Help Me Prepare Dental Interview Preparation

Congratulations on making it this far! Although getting invited for an interview at your choice of Dental School is nerve wrecking, don't forget it's a remarkable accomplishment. You are one step closer to reaching your goal to becoming accepted!

The 50 questions provided are a combination of situational and behavioural type questions. These are the types of questions you will be asked during the interview process. I gaurantee after going through all the questions provided you will notice a significant improvement in your confidence heading into the interview. You will be better prepared and will handle yourself acceptionally well during the interview.

With situational type questions you will be placed in a hypothetical situation in which you will attempt to solve a dilemma. Most of these questions end in What would you do? In a behavioural question the interviwer will ask you to draw upon an experience you had previously and likely, how it unfolded. These questions can also be followed up with, What did you do to solve the problem?

There are 5 important components to include in your answer when asked either a situational or behavioural question, they are:

    1) Understand the scenario

    2) Explain specifically the steps needed to solve the problem

    3) SEC (Sympathy/Empathy/Compassion)

    4) Prevent it from occurring again

    5) Follow-up if possible

Depending on the structure of the questions, there may be times where one of the five components cannot be included in an answer. Although, if you see an opportunity to include any of these areas into your answer, be sure to do so.

    1) Understand

This suggests to never make quick judgments of any individual. Take all circumstances into consideration. The better you are able to prepare for multiple events, the better equipped you will be in answering the questions. How do you improve your understanding? Ask questions and listen to the patient!

    2) Explain

The ability to specifically explain how you plan to solve a dilemma is integral during the interview process. It truly shows your ability to problem solve. For example, you are placed in a situation where an individual is extremely upset at you.

By stating, I will do my best to calm the person down, is simply not an adequate answer. The reason is because you are not solving the problem. Anyone can say calm the person down, but can you specifically discuss strategies to do so? As you look through the answers provided to the 50 questions given, I also go into detail on how much of a description is required to answer these questions well.

    3) SEC (Sympathy/Empathy/Compassion)

Although self explanatory, do not forget to include these important attributes into any answer. These traits are what any individual would expect in a health care professional. Sympathisize with all individuals, understand how they must feel to be in that situation. The best way to do so is to place yourself in their shoes.

In order to empathize it is important to share your ideas and emotions in a respectful and mindful manner.

To be compassionate is to show an individual you truly care about them. How do you do that? Ask questions, make sure they understand what you suggest and strive to solve their problem(s).

    4) Prevent

Another important feature to include if possible in any answer is how you could prevent the dilemma from occurring again. Being able to prevent future occurrences will further impress the interviewers. This shows that you have fully grasped the question and able to prevent the same scenario from occurring again.

    5) Follow-up

Whenever you have the ability to check back up (follow up) with an individual, it goes a long way in showing the individual you care for him/her. By simply stating, I would call Mr. x one week after the appointment to see how he has improved will further impress the interviewers as it shows that you are compassionate about others.

    To conclude,

In order to excel in the interview process, when applicable, be sure to include the important 5 components to your answer:

    1) Understanding

    2) Explanation

    3) SEC

    4) Prevention

    5) Follow-up
