Self-publishing is getting common nowadays due to the low upfront costs for authors and accessibility of digital technologies and web-based publishing software. In countries like India, authors are increasingly using self-publishing tools as they are becoming more widely available in English as well as regional languages. Moreover, the platforms to sell the books that are self-published are also becoming more easily accessible and affordable.
In this book, we discuss the steps for an author to self-publish their manuscript. We go through some of the various tools and platforms currently available and how to use them. It is hoped that this book will be a useful resource for authors, including new Indian authors and those publishing in Indian languages, to know where to begin and what to do in their self-publishing journey.

Chapter 1: Why go for Self-Publishing?

Self-publishing is a way for new authors to publish their books with minimal costs, time and effort and get them out to the readers. Instead of approaching a traditional publisher with their manuscript, self-publishing means that the authors themselves bear the burden of formatting their books, designing the cover and so on. In some cases, self-publishing also includes the marketing and publicity for the published books.
