Chapter 1: Why go for Self-Publishing?

Self-publishing is a way for new authors to publish their books with minimal costs and reasonable investments in time and effort and get them out to the readers as soon as they wish. Instead of approaching a traditional publisher with their manuscript, self-publishing means that the authors themselves bear the burden of formatting and editing their books, designing the cover and so on. In some cases, self-publishing also includes the marketing and publicity for the published books.

In this chapter, we discuss the pros and cons of self-publishing as compared to traditional book publishing and hybrid publishing.

    1.1 Traditional Book Publishing Process

In traditional publishing, the author has to send extracts of their manuscripts, such as a hundred pages or a few chapters, to various established publishers for consideration. The establishing publishing houses then decide, based on the projected sales and other criteria, whether to accept or reject the book for publication.

Another way to traditional publishing is the following: A few authors, or members of the public, are invited by the publishers to submit their manuscripts on specific topics. The publishers then examine the submitted manuscripts by the authors and decide whether to accept or reject the book for publication.

If the manuscript is accepted for publishing, the authors sign a contract with the publishers to complete their book within a mutually agreed timeline. As part of the contract, they usually get a fee from the publishers for completing the book, as well as a share of the royalties from the sales of the book.

The publishers, who are usually well-known book companies that publish thousands of books every year, then take the responsibility of designing the layout and cover, printing, marketing and selling the book through various channels. They may also assist the author with proofreading, illustrations and guidance for writing a more readable book that the intended audience would like to read. They usually have dedicated professional teams for each of these tasks.

Sometimes, professional publishing agents or literary agencies act as the middlemen between the authors and the traditional publishers. They do the work of proofreading the book and marketing it to the publishers, and receive a fee which might be a percentage of the royalties from book
