    INTRODUCTION

‘ISLANDS IN THE SUN’ contains poems about my native homeland, the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and the beautiful resources of the islands.

This book is my 44th publication and my 12th book of poetry. It is also my first book for the New Year 2022.

Trinidad and Tobago is a dual-island Caribbean nation near Venezuela, with distinctive Creole traditions and cuisines.

How do you get here?  Caribbean Airlines is our national airline and travellers enjoy sumptuous meals aboard flights.

The islands hosted boisterous carnivals featuring calypso, soca, and steel band music in pre-Covid times. Carnival costumes were elaborate and stunning, and individual ones were large enough to fill a room.

The steelpan is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. The mesmerizing sound of steel band music is known all over the world. You will laugh at the lyrics, and jump to the beat of calypso and steel band music.

Numerous bird species inhabit sanctuaries such as the Asa Wright Nature Centre and the Caroni Bird Sanctuary. The Scarlet Ibis is the national bird of Trinidad.

The smaller island of Tobago is known for its beaches and the Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve, which shelters hummingbirds. The National Bird is the Cocrico. The capital of Tobago is Scarborough, and it is a cruise port. In pre-Covid times cruise ships visited our shores regularly.

The population of both islands is 1.399 million (2020 World Bank)

The currency used is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar.

Trinidad and Tobago achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1962 and obtained membership in the British Commonwealth and the United Nations. We became a Republic in 1976.

The country of my birth is an island paradise. The diversity of our people is reflected in the islands' numerous festivals.

People who inhabit these islands celebrate their individual cultures. In Trinidad and Tobago, we celebrate the Hindu festival of Divali, the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, and Christian festivals, including Christmas and Easter. Shouter Baptists also have a public holiday.

The islands of Trinidad and Tobago are tourist destinations, and have lovely beaches and hotels with international standards. Both islands have many five-star hotels.

Whether visitors are seeking adventure, sea-bathing, culture or nightlife, Trinidad and Tobago have it all.

The white sandy beaches of Maracas and Tobago can be enjoyed any time, as we have summer all year round.

From the cosmopolitan streets of the capital of Port-of-Spain in Trinidad, to the tranquil beaches of Maracas and Tobago, everyone finds something interesting here.

The islands have the finest hotels.  Hilton, Radisson, Hyatt, and Marriott, are but a few. It’s a remarkable experience revolving around
