    Conventions

    Icons Used in This Book

Given below are some examples with these icons:

Tip: Trimming the start and end points

Keyboard shortcuts can also be used to trim the start and end points to the playhead’s location. To trim points, move the playhead to the desired location and then press Alt+[ or Alt+] to trim the start or end point at the playhead’s location. As an example, consider step 12 above. Place the playhead at the 8 seconds 3 frames mark and then press Alt+] to trim the end point.

    Note: Project settings

Before you begin importing media, you should first decide on the project settings and the output you want.

    Caution: Green clothes

If you’re going to shoot green screen footage, make sure you don’t wear green clothes or you’ll get unexpected results (refer to PE-9489382 and Figure 35). You can use the blue screen for your project if you want to wear your favorite green clothes or if the object you’re shooting is green (refer to grass and Figure 36).

    What just happened?

When you enable the Alpha Channel checkbox, you can gauge how visible the backdrop is. The black regions in the Preview window represent transparency. Notice in Figure 7, there is a lot of gray where there should be blacks.

    What next?

The White layer is overlapping the Deep Blue layer due to the fact that you utilized identical values for both layers. Next, you will offset the animation.

    Important Words

Important words such as menu name, tools’ name, name of the dialog boxes/windows, button names, and so on are in boldface. For example:

At the bottom-right of the Preview window, the Playhead Position field (F3B) shows the current position of the playhead or timecode in hours, minutes, seconds, and frames. For example, 01:10:07:05 represents 1 hour, 10 minutes, 7 seconds, and 5 frames.

    Figure Numbers

Figure numbers in this book are in the following order: Figure 1, Figure 2, and so on. They are presented in the following sequence in tutorials: Figure T1, Figure T2, and so on. After each tutorial, the numbering is reset to 1. In many figures, alphabets are used to identify various components such as buttons, sliders, areas, icons, and so on. These components are denoted by letters such as FnA, FnB, and so on. Here’s an example:

Playback controls are located at the bottom-left corner of the window: Backward (F1A), Forward (F1B), Play (F1C), and Stop (F1D). You can manually jump to any frame in your video by dragging the playhead on the timeline slider (F1E).

The Mark In (F1G) and Mark Out (F1H) buttons are used to quickly mark a clip in the Preview window. We already covered them in the Setting the In and Out Points in the Preview window section of this chapter.

There are several Filmora components that do not have a name or a tooltip. In such cases, the labels are used to name the components. In the figure below, for example, because the slider labeled A lacks a name, it is referred to as the F2A slider:

The F2A slider will let you change the scale of the clip. The clip’s position can be changed by clicking and dragging the clip in the Preview window.

    Video/Audio Tracks

The video and audio tracks in Filmora are labeled with numbers (see Figure 3). In this book, video tracks are referred to as V1, V2, and so on. A1, A2, and so on are the names of audio tracks. For example:

Navigate to the Elements tab > Fun category. Then, drag the Energy Orb element at the beginning of the V2 track. Resize the orb in the Preview window.

    Video/Audio Tracks

This book makes extensive use of free stock video and picture resources. These files may be downloaded and used for free from websites such as pixabay.com and pexels.com. When you acquire resources from Neurons Factory, you will have access to the footage-download-links.txt file.

This file contains links to all of the stock footage used in this book. Each video on these websites is given a unique ID. Videos in this book are given names depending on their IDs. If you don’t have access to a certain video, you may acquire it by following a link in the text file and saving it with the name specified in the Save As field. These videos should be saved in the /resources/media folder.

For example, if the URL is https://pixabay.com/videos/boy-jump-dance-man-person-dancing-21827, then save it as PE-21827.MP4 in the \resources\media folder. In PE-21827.MP4, PE stands for Pexels, for Pixabay, PI is used. Here’s an example how these names are used:

Double-click on the PE-5584372 clip in the timeline. Then, in the Video tab, enable the Chroma Key checkbox. By simply enabling this checkbox; Filmora removes the green color from the clip and PI-1408221 is visible in the Preview window. This happens because in the Video tab > Chroma Key section, green color is set by default.
