Gratitude
My sincere thanks to my lovely aunt Asha Kapoor, who introduced me to the idea of reciting Hanuman Chalisa every day to bring a positive change in me and my life circumstances.
"As we sing the Hanuman Chalisa, our hearts and minds are purified, and gradually we are freed of our attachment and negativity, allowing us to recognize our Oneness with all."
— Krishna Das
"Every time I experience negativity in the world, and in myself, every time I encounter jealousy, rage, and frustration manifesting as violation and violence, I hear, or read, the Hanuman Chalisa... As verse follows verse, my frightened, crumpled mind begins to expand with knowledge and insight, and my faith in humanity, both within and without, is restored."
— Devdutt Pattanaik
Introduction
The Hanuman Chalisa is, without doubt, the most popular Hindu devotional hymn (stotra) not only in the land of India but around the world. It’s also one of the most powerful prayers and meditations of humanity. It is widely believed that chanting the Chalisa invokes Hanuman’s divine intervention amidst grave problems and challenges.
The Hanuman Chalisa was authored in the Awadhi language by Tulsidas, a poet-saint who lived in the 16th century and is his best-known text apart from the widely read Ramcharitmanas. The word chalisa
is derived from chalis,
which means the number forty in Hindi, as the Hanuman Chalisa has 40 verses (excluding couplets at the beginning and at the end of the hymn).
Hanuman is an ardent devotee of Ram and one of the central characters in the renowned Hindu epic, the Ramayana. According to the Hindu legend, Hanuman is considered an incarnation of Shiva, the hermit God. Numerous folk tales acclaim the virtues and supernatural powers of Hanuman. Recitation or chanting of the Hanuman Chalisa is a common spiritual practice among people all around India. Being the most popular hymn in praise of Hanuman, the Hanuman Chalisa is recited by millions of Hindus every day, both in good times and bad.
This work consists of forty-three verses – two introductory couplets (dohas), forty quatrains (chaupais), and one concluding couplet in the end.
In this book, my aim is to offer a renewed understanding of this beautiful, soul-enhancing hymn in the form of simple, concise, and easy-to-read meditations. Every meditation has been crafted to give you the essence of the message Tulsidas conveys in each verse of this sacred song.
I am not a Hindu scholar, nor do I claim to be. I am just a regular guy seeking to uncover and understand the deeper layers of meaning within each verse in this poem. At the end of 2020, I found myself in a deep negative spiral due to a personal health issue, some unresolved trauma due to certain big, unplanned changes and events that happened in my life a few years back, along with the continual pandemic-induced isolation that sometimes got the better of me. Fear, anxiety, and worry started overpowering me in ways I could never have imagined. It was during that time that my aunt advised me to read and listen to the Hanuman Chalisa. After some initial hesitation, I started my daily discipline of reciting Hanuman Chalisa at the beginning of 2021, and I have not looked back ever since.
As I continued with my spiritual practice, being the curious soul that I am, I wondered what each word meant and what exact message the poet attempts to convey in each verse. This got me into reading multiple books and online posts on Hanuman Chalisa, which over the span of a few months, transpired into me writing my very own book on this subject. As I explored this composition, I realized each verse conveys one or more key elements of the extensive body of Hindu thought, a heritage of more than 4,000 years that encompasses Yoga, Pranayama, Ayurveda, and several other Vedic concepts.
In a matter of a few weeks, I became a humble devotee of Hanuman and established a strong divine connection that had always for some reason eluded me. The virtues that he stands for struck a chord with me and I felt a deep alignment with his divine persona. Gradually, faith and positivity flourished in me and started overpowering the weeds of fear and negativity that had previously taken a toll on me. At the moment, I can definitely say with utmost honesty and confidence that reciting Hanuman Chalisa every day and writing this book in the past few months did help me in getting my life and my overall health and well-being back on track. There’s still a long way to go, but things have definitely taken a turn for the better.
Having discussed my personal experience, I hope this book ends up benefiting you immensely too. Please keep in mind that this attempt to decode and demystify Hanuman Chalisa is purely devotional – it’s simple, straightforward, and for sure more spiritual than scholarly.
As you go through the forty-three verses of the text and the corresponding meditations in this book, you will notice the incredible genius of Tulsidas and how sensitively and impeccably he has composed and structured this work, how it inspires to create your own mind-temple and enshrine, observe and revere the beloved deity Hanuman in that temple, and thus cultivate an overpowering
