    Summary

    The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman is a novel that chronicles the lives of a couple and the baby they adopt. The couple, Tom and Isabel, live on an island. They find the baby washed up on shore and decide to raise the child as their own. The baby’s mother is actually still alive and searching for her child, and the couple eventually must return the girl to her biological mother under threat of criminal charges for kidnapping and fraud.

    Tom Sherbourne is a war hero who joins the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service to tend the lighthouse on Janus Rock, a fictional rocky island off the coast of Australia. Tom is a World War I veteran scarred by what he has seen and done in the war; he feels that the isolation might help him overcome his dark memories. En route to the lighthouse, Tom travels to a fictional town called Partageuse. On the way, he saves a woman from harassment by lewd, drunken attacker.

    While in Partageuse, Tom meets Isabel Graysmark. She writes to him while he is away at Janus Rock. They soon marry, and Isabel goes to live with Tom and help him operate the Janus Rock lighthouse. The two are very much in love, and come to adore the island. Isabel has three miscarriages. The third miscarriage renders her unable to have children. Not long after, on April 27, 1926, a boat containing a
