    Summary

The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a complex novel by writer Richard Flanagan. The novel tells the story of Alwyn Dorrigo Evans, an Australian man who struggles with war, adultery, and guilt during the World War II era.

Dorrigo is attracted to her because he knows if he marries her, he will be recognized as part of her class, leaving the stigma of his own working class behind.

It is a loveless marriage. Dorrigo and Amy begin an intense affair. Mulvaney finds out about the affair and forces Amy to end it. Amy does so with a call to Dorrigo at his military base. He promises to find her after the war.
