Summary
The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a complex novel by writer Richard Flanagan. The novel tells the story of Alwyn Dorrigo Evans, an Australian man who struggles with war, adultery, and guilt during the World War II era.
Born into a working class family in Tasmania, Australia, Dorrigo strives to be more than his class. He becomes a surgeon and courts a young woman, Ella. Dorrigo is attracted to her because he knows if he marries her, he will be recognized as part of her class, leaving the stigma of his own working class behind.
While still courting Ella, Dorrigo joins the military at the start of World War II. While in basic training, he meets and falls in love with Amy, the wife of his uncle, Keith Mulvaney. It is a loveless marriage. Dorrigo and Amy begin an intense affair. Mulvaney finds out about the affair and forces Amy to end it. Amy does so with a call to Dorrigo at his military base. He promises to find her after the war.
During the war, Dorrigo and his unit are interned in a Japanese prisoner of war (POW) camp. In this camp, the commanders and guards are tasked with building a railroad through the mountains with the prisoners as their work crew. They work the POWs into starvation, injury, and death.
In the POW camp, Dorrigo seeks to survive as well as possible. His sole ambition is to ensure the survival of as many men under his command as possible. He works as a doctor to heal them, as a protector from the violence of the Japanese captors, and
