Additionally, with the rise of the internet in the 1990s, the tech industry rapidly expanded.

    As the banking, lobbying, and technology industries grew, the old industrial economy of the heartland began to decline. Industries like steel, textiles, and tobacco faded. Crucially, the government opted not to play a role in helping to manage deindustrialization. As a result, working- and middle-class factory workers and farmers lost their jobs and their way of life.
