The first leg of the journey is a conceptual framework that unites the other four chapters and explains the main characteristics of the world we live in.

The world is becoming more and more interconnected, which makes it extremely difficult to determine what risks will affect which systems, making it near impossible to isolate or contain any risks.

The interconnectedness of the world’s risks was made clear in a chart taken from the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2020. Each individual risk always combines with those from its own macro category, but also with the individual risks from the other macro categories.

The interconnected nature of the modern world means that problems and risks cannot be solved in isolation, but require a collective effort between all parties involved.

The author blames technological progress and globalization for the shortening of decision-making cycles, which has led to a culture of urgency. Everything is moving faster now, from social unrest to technological developments and adoption.
