The process of human development is not linear. While some might argue that the changes in American cities from small towns to big cities have been for the better, the truth is that they were completely unexpected and abrupt.

America is a prime example of a nation that underwent a radical transformation, and in a very short period of time.

The development pattern that was used in North America through the late 1800s represents thousands of years of received wisdom on how to build human habitat. In no way was it perfect, but it’s important to remember that perfection is not possible in a system with so many competing priorities and objectives.

The author visited Pompeii and saw a small restaurant that served as a fast food joint. He was shocked to see how people lived in such a poverty-stricken environment. Yet, the owner of the restaurant had created an income stream that allowed him to expand his business and gain wealth over time.
