    Dedication

I would like to dedicate this book to everyone…

Who felt like they couldn’t see any hope in their future.

Who have flinched at their past.

Who have been told there isn’t redemption from their choices or the choices others made that affected them.

Whoever believed they were too far gone.

Who has ever felt the sting of guilt, shame, hurt, anger, disappointment.

Whatever it may be. Just know, though you may not know me personally, you have someone here standing with you, and you are not alone. And possibly, you will see that if you are not alone, then someone else knows they aren’t either—that maybe all who read this book are connected to one another. I pray there is a sense of comfort you receive in knowing you and many others are in this together, even if it’s only through the pages of this book. I may not know your name or your story. But remember, out of the people in this world, you happened to pick up this book. And this? This one’s for you.

    Acknowledgements

To everyone that helped me on this journey, thank you and God bless you all.

I want to say a special thank you to, first and foremost above all else, God. For giving me the revelation that inspired a poem that led to a book. For being my rock while going through a dark time when writing it and never giving up on me when I had already given up on myself. When I didn’t have any faith or hope left, for helping me to see You were always there.

Thank you to my family for their support.

Thank you to my sister, Jennifer. I don’t know what I would have done without you…

Having you read this book for what seemed like a hundred times.

Constantly sending you updated versions of each draft, wondering if it was good enough.

Asking for your opinion and wondering if there was any way to make it better or if there was something I left out that could help people even more.

For standing by me when I was broken while writing this.

Always having your support until this book finally came to the final result.

    I’ll cherish those memories forever.

Thank you to my brother, Relando… For being one of the first people I told about this story. For you pushing me to see how much others needed to hear it, but even more so how much I needed it for myself as well. For seeing your eyes when I told you what God showed me, sharing parts of the book with you, and remembering what you told me. I’m looking forward to the day I hear you preach a message on this, just like you said you would. I’ll be sitting in the front row.

To Sister Diaz, thank you for encouraging me to do whatever I needed to do to speak to those God is reaching for and helping me to believe God could still use me as the one to do it.

Last but certainly not least, I want to give a very special thank you to my mom, Liz. You have no idea how much I appreciate you, Mommy. I owe you everything. You are the reason this book began to be written, and you’re the reason it is completed. Thank you for seeing in me what I couldn’t see in myself and pushing me until I did. For carrying me when I couldn’t walk and speaking life back into me when I was dying inside. For being my strength in weakness and my light in the darkest of nights. For being the leader I needed to bring me back to God when I thought He wouldn’t want me anymore, and I was convinced He was done with me, and when I couldn’t see any chance of deliverance for myself. I could never put into words what you did for me, and for that, I am eternally grateful. I love you more than mere words could ever express. You were the Moses in my life, Mommy. Thank you for not leaving me in Egypt.

    Introduction

Exodus. An all too familiar book containing the account of the Israelites and how salvation came to a people that had been enslaved for over 400 years. We’ve heard of the signs and wonders that came and plagued the entire country of Egypt and the great deliverance of God’s people. Deliverance from the hands of their oppressors. Seeing those who chased after them be overcome and wiped away by the same sea that Israel crossed over to head towards their promised land.

Looking back to see the sea closed and the dust settled, and their enemies no longer in sight. Finally, Israel was now across, away from their abusers, and able to move towards the land their God had sworn to them. The land flowing with milk and honey. Able to go on to houses they didn’t build and vineyards they didn’t plant. But that brings me to wonder… What happened to the Egyptians?

We read of those that left with Israel. We read of the ones that Pharaoh charged to pursue them, which were cast into the sea and drowned. But what about those that remained in Egypt?

When Israel was out of sight.

When the cloud could no longer be seen by day, nor the pillar of fire by night.

When the cries of the night before from the death that swept across the nation are still ringing in the ears of all those who remained.
