Gizmo smiled as her heart skipped a beat and she exclaimed, That’s what I’ve been looking for! It’s a werewolf. A big, black werewolf! I’ve read about them in books, but wasn’t sure they existed. Oh my gosh! I can’t believe it! I caught a black werewolf! Strangely enough, it had on tattered pants, and on its right leg from the knee down, it had a robotic leg. After studying it for a while, they decided it needed a name. Finally, they agreed on the name Spike, because they thought it suited him.

    Chapter 1

    A New Friend

Luna was not poor; she just wasn’t the luckiest thirteen-year-old in the world. Okay, maybe she was a little poor, but not that bad. She was just alone. It’s difficult at times to travel around and make new friends. People don’t usually like to be friends with a hobo, but that’s the story of Luna’s life. Luna’s journey was full of sacrifices, travel, hard work, and loneliness. She never knew life could be different until the day she went to the market—the day her life changed forever.

Luna lived in a tree house inside a forest on the edge of a massive desert. One morning, as she woke up, she bumped her head on a branch. Rubbing it, she looked over at her pet hamster and said, I’m going to the market with the money I made from selling last week’s tools. I have a feeling this is going to be a good day. Luna felt hopeful as she prepared to leave.

Before climbing down the ladder, Luna fed Coco some seeds she had gathered from the forest floor the day before.

When that was done, she grabbed her backpack, which would hold the stuff she was going to buy, and headed out.

Today was going to be a long day. It would take her several hours to walk to the market; however, if she decided to stop and wash off in the stream on the way, it would take even longer. And once she got there, she loved looking at things and people-watching. She was never around people, except on her trips to the market, and people had always fascinated her by the things they said and did. Sometimes, she would start up a conversation with someone.

Hours later, as Luna entered the market, she looked around and saw all the stand owners selling things. There were fruits stands, vegetable stands, and flower stands. There was even a stand selling tools that bought the tools she made and then resold them. While Luna was deciding which stand to go to first, her eyes met an old man’s strong glare. His teeth were gritted as if he were saying, You better not come here. He knew that she would never buy any of the statues he made, so Luna looked away.

The Discount Meat and Carrots stand was her favorite place, so she headed there instead. As she approached the stand, the owner looked at her with his big, crooked grin and said, Hello. He knew she would buy something, and she was always so happy.

Hi, Luna replied with a big smile. I would like some meat and fresh baby carrots. She knew how much Coco loved carrots. The little hamster would stuff small bits of carrots into her mouth, storing them in her cheek pouches until they were bulging. Then she would carry them to her secret food stash in the corner of her cage and push them out with her feet. Luna was always amazed at how much she could stuff in her pouches.

She also bought an extra piece of bread using up one of her emergency coins she kept in her shoe. She didn’t want
