Chapter 1
In Marna Town, there are demons, the highest up on the food chain; next, the vampires who roam at night; then, the werewolves who prefer to live out in nature, and the lowest on the food chain, the magical fey.
Alena Grace weaves her way through the market, careful to keep her magic close to her to keep it from being detected. She passes a demon with horns on his head. She can sense the wild and unpredictable nature of the demons, the primal vampires and the strong but gentle werewolves.
The town has a king and queen. The king was driven mad by the very magic of the town. It was no secret to the fey that the king and the queen live in the very heart of the town, where magic is wild and alluring.
Alena is unique, even for a fey, with her long midnight blue hair, soft purple wings, and eyes every colour of the rainbow. Now, she is moving along, looking for scraps to take home to her frail mother. Alena sidesteps a werewolf, as large as they come. She can pay for two apples from a stall. Her mother needs all the nutrition she can get.
It’s midnight, but the town is alive as if it’s daytime, with the vampires the loudest of the lot. It’s when she makes her way back to her house that it happens – two cloaked figures gangs up on a vampire. He screams as they burn the skin off his body.
The town is cruel, Alena thinks. Often victims don’t warrant anything to earn the ire of whoever is killing that night, and the king and queen do nothing about this. There are often killings at night; some are too horrifying to be spoken about.
Alena’s heart is beating. They mustn’t detect her. She pulls her magic tighter than before, and as softly as she can, unfurls her wings. She glides over the ground, wanting to put as much distance between her and the murder scene. As she enters the woods, she detects another presence behind her. She quickens her stride, and the presence quickens his stride as well. Without thinking about it, she takes off and sprints through the bushes, grabbing at her ankles, wanting her to fall. Branches scrape cruelly at her cheeks as she runs this way and that to throw off the person. Finally, she stops before her house decorated in purple. She enters through the door. Ma, I’m home,
she calls into the house.
Leni dear, is that you? Come on up.
Lights flicker on as she walks through the house and goes up the stairs. Her mother is sitting up in bed, frail, with veins showing through the skin of her hands, but her smile is radiant for her only daughter.
I am afraid, Ma. I just had to run away from a murder scene.
The fey keeps to themselves, as they don’t matter to the higher-ups, to anyone but themselves. In their community, it’s a rule that sharing is caring. They share everything they have, for they don’t know what the next day holds. It will be all right, dear, as long as we keep to ourselves, there is nothing to fear.
Alena isn’t so sure. She sits down on the carpet in front of her mother and listens to their history as she runs a comb through her hair.
The power surge is very subtle initially but gets more pronounced as the seconds tick on. Alena and her mother creep down the stairs and to the front door. There, outside, is a demon, sending his power into their house to destroy it.
You run, Leni, I’ve got this,
her mother says and goes outside. She is a vision to behold, standing tall and proud, with no trace of her sickness as she lifts her hands. Her white wings and face shine beautifully in the moonlight. This is what history was talking about, Alena thinks, as she stands in awe. This is what the fey look like when they are at war against a demon. A ring of fire surrounds her mother before she flings the flames at her attacker.
The fey can control fire, and their control is the best in town; the reason the higher-ups are afraid of them and why the fey is living in poverty.
The demon sends a blast of power to her mother that her fire absorbs. The demon shrieks as she sends an arrow of fire at his chest, and he sends a shot of pure black burst at her mother. She crumbles where she stands.
Seeing that her mother isn’t moving, something within Alena snaps, the ground shakes under her feet, thunder rolls in the skies as she instinctively focuses her power. Lightning comes down and zaps the demon where he stands, and with a satisfying shriek, he dies.
Alena crawls to where her mother is lying. She begs her mother in a pleading voice to get up,
