INTRODUCTION
Communication is one of the most basic necessities of human existence, the need to understand and be understood. Since man is a social being, it is important that he develops a means of communication with others including the deaf
(Riekehof 1987). Deaf people throughout the world developed a visual language commonly known as Sign Language. It is the readiest and quickest means of bringing words to the eyes of the deaf.
The Authors therefore came up with the TALKING HANDS, First Edition which is more comprehensive. This book provides the students and interested learners, deaf or hearing, basic and easy lessons in Sign Language. This manual presents more than 900 basic vocabulary words in 33 lessons. The choice of signs was based on the words that are commonly and frequently used. They are also based on the American Sign Language (ASL) and the Sign Exact English (SEE) or Initializations. They are arranged artistically by Handshapes with Parts of Speech as subtitles to help students learn and remember the sign clusters easily. The features of the book are:
Part I Lessons on the Introductory Signs for Vocabulary Building: Alphabet, Numbers, Greetings and Expressions.
Part II Lessons on Basic Signs by Handshapes for Vocabulary Building.
Presentations of the lessons are done in 5 columns: Words/Illustrations, Handshapes, Movements/Positions, Descriptions and Ideas. It is quite easy to learn these lessons if there is a teacher infront executing the signs however if you forget them these cues will help you.
First, look at the Picture, Words/Illustrations to get a general view then the Handshapes to follow how the signs are formed. Next the Movements/Positions which are directional signs after that the Descriptions which are step by step instructions and movements and lastly the Ideas so you will understand the meaning of those particular sign formations. This, as a whole, makes Sign Language easy, interesting and exciting.
At the end of every lesson are Practice Sentences. These sentences contain some of the words found in that particular lesson. The sentences are sometimes funny and non-sensical. These sentences however, promote instant recall, automatic response of the signs in smooth and flowing movements. The signs also must be executed according to the mood of the sentence. For example, if it conveys a happy disposition, facial expressions must also show a happy face, etc.
Part III Practice Songs, Poems, Stories and more Practice Sentences
This compilation of songs, poems, stories is signable and also a good material to practice one’s skill in Artistic Interpreting.
The authors of this book, The Talking Hands, 1st Ed., acknowledge, extend special thanks and give due recognition to the authors and writers of the songs, poems and stories used in this manual.
The purpose of this book is two-fold: First, is to provide a teaching-learning tool for teachers who wish to use Sign Language as a medium of instruction to the deaf or just to teach the Language of Signs. Second, is to provide training material in Sign Language for interested persons, deaf or hearing for personal improvement or for greener pastures.
With the advent of Sign Language, the Hearing and Special people can now experience better and profitable communications. Communication barrier is overcome thus understanding, peace and harmony are achieved. This makes our life in this world enjoyable, interesting and fulfilling which God actually meant it to be.
It is the Authors’ privilege and pleasure to encourage and help you communicate with the Special People
through the movements of your TALKING HANDS.
Lastly, the authors humbly plead to the public and clienteles of this book not to remove or delete their names instead give due credit to them as the rightful owners of this Sign Language Manual.
Thank you and happy signing!!!
