12 Commandments of Independent Self-Publishing - Joan Pont

Dear reader, this book is a continuation of YES, I WANT. YES, I CAN. How to write your first book and publish it online, but it can be read independently.

The idea for this book came from my experience on Twitter (#12commandmentsofselfpublishingindependence) and Facebook.

In the first of the social network I met many authors who had written a single book, or a couple of them, and were devoting all their illusions and efforts to promote them in a totally wrong place: a social network of writers. No one will buy or read your book in a social network formed by people whose main objective is that others (you) read and buy their books.

On the second platform, Facebook, I found writers asking questions like, Tell me publishers where I can send my book or Help me get the inspiration to write.

As a writer who has already visited most of the underworlds of indie self-publishing these scenes caused me great sadness.

Social media is a must, but not to find inspiration or to sell your book to other writers.

Dedicating all the illusion and effort to a single work when, thanks to the widespread access to self-publishing, thousands of books are published every day, will lead, most of the time, to an immense disillusionment and maybe even to the abandonment of writing.

This book is intended to be the definitive guide to accompany you in your literary life. 12 golden rules to succeed in self-publishing and overcome moments of uncertainty and discouragement. And also to cope with success.

    Here we go.

    Joan Pont.

1st COMMANDMENT - YOU ARE NOT AND WILL NOT BE A GREAT WRITER. KEEP YOUR HOPES HIGH AND YOUR EXPECTATIONS LOW. THE VALUE OF THE REWARDS WILL EXPONENTIALLY INCREASE IN VALUE THIS WAY.

Are you not and will not be a great writer? Is this the right way to start a book that claims to be a definitive guide? I think so.

Just think of something many celebrities say after experiencing the heartaches of the meteoric rise and then the fall: I wish someone would have put my head back on my shoulders.

This sentence is very representative of what too high an ego means for someone starting to distribute his first literary work.

The premiere, the euphoria of publication and presentations and... after a while, oblivion.

In reality, there is a 99.999999% chance that no one will ever read what you have written, except your family and friends.

    Disappointed?

Don't be. You have this book.

The worst thing that can happen to you is that no one tells you the truth and you rush your illusion to the limit, until it disappears. To avoid this:

    KEEP YOUR EXPECTATIONS LOW.

    WRITE BECAUSE YOU LIKE IT.

PUBLISH BECAUSE YOU LIKE IT, NOT TO SELL.

Writing, publishing, is a compendium of illusion and work in equal parts. The former should not exceed the latter. If, as is normal, your first work fails to stand out from the rest, you should move on and leave it behind. Later you can take it up again, revise it, or not... maybe it is a very promising work and the only thing that has happened is that the maelstrom has eclipsed it, and the volume and quality of your next books rescue it and bring it back to life.

The most striking example of this is Dan Brown, the author of The Da Vinci Code.

Dan Brown published three novels before his worldwide success, all of which passed unnoticed on bookstore shelves.

    The Digital Fortress (1998)

    The Conspiracy (2001)

    Angels and Demons (2000)

It wasn't until 2003 that he broke the market with The Da Vinci Code and, not surprisingly, his earlier works also resurfaced.

Dan Brown did not stop after The Digital Fortress and continued with his work, despite the poor sales success. He believed in himself, but he was a realist and his expectations
