To My Family:
Thank you for your patience, love, and support while I worked on this.
To the Carpool Crew:
This book was inspired by the stories we told on the drive to school years ago. Though none of you are children any longer, I hope you still enjoy this. And maybe you’ll have some good memories of time spent in our land of Safarus.
Chapter 1
The Dream
The girl ran down the long, dark tunnel. She knew something was behind her. Yet, she dared not look back to see what it was.
Every time the thing moved, the ground shook beneath her. It was moving fast—and getting closer. She willed herself to keep going as fast as possible.
Just...a...little...further!
she thought.
Her heartbeat was pounding in her ears. She was gasping for air. Her muscles screamed. Her legs were wobbly—each step felt weaker than the last. Then she heard something, strong and loud, like a clap of thunder.
Now, it was upon her. She felt heat all around. Then, suddenly, nothing but silence. After a moment, she heard a faint sound come out of nowhere. It was a voice speaking—but she couldn’t make out any words.
She strained to listen and was finally able to make sense of what she heard, Wake up! Wake up! Mayghan, wake up!
She opened her eyes and blinked. The room around her slowly came into focus. A blurry figure stood next to her, holding a brightly lit candle. The features weren’t quite yet clear, but she recognized the voice of her sister, Grayce.
Bad dream again?
, asked Grayce.
Yeah,
Mayghan answered weakly.
Grayce looked worried. She said, you really scared me. You yelled out in your sleep. And it was hard to wake you up this time. What was it about?
Mayghan sat up in bed, rubbed her eyes, and thought back to her dream. She said, I don’t remember a lot of details. Something was chasing me. But…I’m not sure what it was.
Was it like the other dreams?
Grayce asked.
Yes. Well…maybe,
Mayghan answered. She wasn’t quite sure.
The girls sat quietly for a few minutes. Then Mayghan’s hand flew to her neck just as Grayce pointed. The dreams began with the necklace!
Chapter 2
The Sisters
Ten Days Earlier
The King of Safarus had two daughters. Though they were twin sisters, they didn’t look alike at all.
The one with green eyes and long red hair, the color of fire, was named Mayghanara. The other one, with bright blue eyes and shorter blonde hair, the color of gold, was named Grayceous. These were their royal names—but most of the time they were called Mayghan and Grayce.
Since the king was an important person, it was common for people to come visit him. But, once in a while, the king had to travel. And today was one of those times. He was about to leave on a trip to visit the southern part of his kingdom.
As the servants packed the horses and royal carriage, the king stopped by at breakfast to speak with his two daughters.
I have a big surprise for your birthday,
Father said.
What is it?
both girls asked.
Is it a horse?
asked Mayghan.
Oh, I hope it is!
Grayce added. We’ve wanted one for a long time.
Their father laughed. I can’t tell you what it is, that’s the whole point of a surprise!
But I think you’ll like it,
he added with a wink.
You know something else we’d like?
Mayghan asked.
Let me guess,
Father said, knowing what was coming next. You want to go with me?
Yeah. We never go anywhere!
Grayce said with a frown.
"Sorry, but
