Has Anyone Seen My Doppelgänger? - T. Joseph Dwornicki
CHAPTER ONE
Hey look, what’s that up there in the sky?
cried James. (James, insisted strictly on being called James and not Jim or Jimmy, as that was his name) was the self-proclaimed leader of the four misfits, or outsiders if you like, that kept to themselves.
Where?
demanded Jenny. She was the only girl in the gang. She had nerves of steel and was apparently not very afraid of much, so they all let her in.
There!
cried James as he pointed to the northeast. The skies were filled with heavy clouds. It was late evening and darkness was rapidly filling the area around them. The clouds however, began glowing an orangish color which became brighter and brighter. Then suddenly, whoosh…
An unidentified object burst through the cloud and soared over their heads. It dropped suddenly towards the sand dunes of a lake that bordered the north section of town. They hear a soft dull thud as it landed.
It must have landed by the lake somewhere. Let’s go find it!
cried Jenny excitedly.
You can go but I’m late for supper,
complained Miles who was the fraidy-cat of the bunch.
You’re coming, like it or not Miles,
growled James.
Oh, all right. But if anything happens, I’m out of there.
No way! This is a big deal. We should get all the credit,
said Jenny.
Gary, the last of the four, was a follower and he shook his head in agreement.
It was lucky for them that it was dinnertime, so it was possible that they were the only ones to witness the incident.
All right, but let’s hurry it up so I won’t get into any more trouble at home,
whined Miles. They hurried off as fast as they were able to the edge of the brackish lake forming the northern boundary of their coastal town.
But when they got there, there was no evidence of any kind that anything had happened at all. There was some disturbance in the sand on the face of the largest dune along the shore, but that could have been made by any of the wildlife found in the woods nearby. The giddiness at finding a world-changing discovery faded quickly away.
It’s getting way too dark to look any further tonight," groused a disappointed Jenny.
But I know that we all saw something fall from the sky and land here.
said Gary.
I agree, it’s getting late. Tomorrow is Saturday. Let’s meet at our usual time and place and go on from there.
said James. The usual place was a rundown sort of convenience store that sold little in the way of groceries, but it was stocked with their favorite treats and soda. The four of them met at the store every Saturday morning to start the weekend.
They broke up then left for home. Jenny lived the closest and was the first to arrive at home. Her family already had eaten their supper and she found her mother sitting at the kitchen table going through this month’s bills.
You’re late, young lady. Dinner is over. Make yourself a plate of leftovers. Then come and sit down and eat,
said Jenny’s mother. Jenny did as she was told, then she sat across from her mother at the table.
Well, you’re late in getting home from school tonight,
observed Jenny’s mother. Everything okay?" she asked.
Okay,
replied Jenny.
Okay? That’s not even a complete sentence, let alone an answer. Is everything all right at school?
asked her mother.
Everything’s fine,
replied Jenny.
Did anything unusual or interesting happen with you or any of your friends?
Nope.
Finish your food, then go up to your room and finish your homework. If you finish in time, you may watch some television,
said her mother. Jenny went up but she did not come back downstairs. She was not interested in watching any television.
Instead, she crawled into bed, then propped herself with some pillows so she could look out towards the lake. It was still cloudy and calm outside. Perhaps all would be revealed in the bright sunlight.
The rest of the squad was having trouble falling asleep also. James was having the most difficultly so he pulled his writing desk over to his window so that he too could look towards the lake. His brain was swirling with all sorts of possibilities and questions.
Would they find themselves face to face with the alien monster, and how would you capture one anyway? Would it be able to speak our language? If it asked to see our leader, who would that be anyway? James would be his spokesman.
After some time, James brought out his telescope that he had received for his birthday, then placed it on the desk. He trained it on the lakeshore, but he couldn’t make out anything through the inky darkness. Searching as he did, there was no clue for him to discover. His mind was simply reeling. After all, this was not the big city with excitement around every corner. It was a small sleepy town where the weather was often the biggest news.
CHAPTER TWO
"James, are you going to lie in bed all day? Do your chores and then you can meet up with your friends. What do you want for breakfast?" yelled his mother to his bedroom.
Just some oatmeal and some juice please,
replied James.
It’ll be ready for you when you get down here,
said his mother. James jumped out of his bed, threw on some old clothes, then raced downstairs for his breakfast.
What’s the big rush today? You have something pressing going on today?
asked James’ mother.
I want to make sure that I meet up with Gary and the others,
explained James. He gulped down his meal and cleared his dishes. He grabbed a paper bag containing some ‘things’ that he might need later. He hurried out the back porch door, leaving the screen door to slam closed behind him.
James mounted his bike then pedaled furiously towards the convenience store until he arrived at the store. Gary and Miles were already there, waiting for Jenny and himself. They had placed their bikes against the light post and were sitting on the curb. That was where all of the important matters were discussed.
James put down his bike and was about to enter the store when Jenny came speeding up to the shop. James who had just arrived himself, sneered at Jenny.
You’re late!
scolded James.
Sorrreee!
Jenny sarcastically replied. "I couldn’t sleep all last night and it wasn’t until morning that I could fall asleep.
I’m going inside,
said James and he went inside the store. Jenny followed him in. Soon after, all four of them were sitting on the curb, talking excitedly and at once.
Whoa, whoa… one at a time,
said James. What was it you said, Gary?
I suggest that we just go back and start our search where we left off last night,
said Gary.
And let’s not act as if we’re not doing anything suspicious,
warned James.
That’s pretty good coming from you, James,
chided Jenny. You always have this guilty look on your face.
Hardee – har-har-har, could you be any funnier?
moaned James. But there was some truth to that statement. James had a long, thin face, tightly curled hair, and beady eyes that gave him a certain ‘look.’
It’s getting late, so we need to get going now. Coming, Miles?
I don’t know…
They got on their bikes, then headed straight for the sand dunes they were searching around the night before. They crisscrossed the area, combing the grounds for any type of clue. But there were none to be found.
We’re wasting our time here,
whined Gary. All I could find were our tracks that we made ourselves last night.
I know that this is where we saw that ‘thing’ come down,
he cried. Let’s head for the school playground and mess around there for a while and have some fun,
said Jenny. They grabbed their bikes and prepared to ride off. But before they had gotten very far…
Hey, look at this! There is a set of footprints that we missed,
exclaimed Jenny. There were indeed some prints in the the sand leading towards town. They were very strange looking.
They appeared to be human, but not human.
