    Prologue

There was a loud bang as if a gunshot broke the deafening silence. In reality, there wasn’t anyone other than Sam in the house. She was sitting on the couch with a cup of coffee, reading a magazine that she wasn’t really interested in.

It was nothing close to a gunshot; it was her phone buzzing and falling off the coffee table. The sound wasn't even loud. But for Sam, it was. Her heart skipped one beat, and she spilled a bit of coffee on her light blue blouse. No one pulled a trigger on any gun, except for the one with all the memories attached. It took her a couple of minutes to compose herself so that she could check who had called her.

She picked her phone up and placed her cup on the low coffee table. It was an unknown number, so she hesitated but called them back. A man answered the phone.

Hello? Sam said. Who is this?

Hello, Sam, the man said. This is John from Dr. Stacy Dunne’s clinic.

Oh, Sam sighed, shutting her eyes and running her fingers through her red hair.

I wanted to ask you when you would like to reschedule your appointment, John said. Dr. Dunne insists you attend it tomorrow, if not today.

I— She hesitated but thought she might not be able to put the appointment off again.

She has a free slot today at 2 p.m. and one tomorrow at 1 p.m., John said. Whichever suits you best.

    Sam didn’t say anything.

You can even talk to her over the phone, John continued, but she insists that you speak to her as soon as you can.

Sam sighed, defeated.  Today, she said. I’ll be there by two.

Sam disconnected the call. She needed some help with her PTSD, and Stacy Dunne was her therapist.

It was almost noon. Sam took a quick shower, chose a white top, and put on a pair of blue jeans. She looked at herself in the mirror, deep into her own green, almond-shaped eyes, and realized that she didn’t recognize who was looking back at her. That was part of the problem. Among so many other things that tied her down, it was the feeling that she couldn’t remember who she was that made her weak.

Her ride to Stacy Dunne’s clinic was smooth, except for the occasional urge to turn around and go home.

She entered the clinic, nodding her head at John. She wasn’t early, but exactly right on time, like always.

Hello, Sam, John said. "I hope
