    Velma looked out the window. Snow fell in soft flakes, coating the yard and making it brighter than the dull grey sky.

    Stop daydreaming, Velma. You know Enid makes us feel guilty when we’re late.

    Velma smiled. She’d won a few arguments with Enid in the last few months and noticed her eldest sister didn’t criticise her as often as usual. She placed the last fruit mince pie into the tin, then pushed the lid shut.

    Ready, just need to get my coat.

    Here. Josie handed her the thick garment and swooped up the tin. Tom is waiting for us in the passageway.

    Velma, her sister and brother-in-law, braved the elements on the way to Enid’s house. Large mittens kept her hands warm. She burrowed her chin into the warm scarf Josie had knitted for her birthday.

    Thank goodness I bought this coat. It should last for years. If they declare war, rationing will make buying this quality of clothing impossible.
