IT'S A MIRACLE - Gertrude Young
Chapter 1
What a Difference a Day Makes
There is a song called, What a Difference a Day Makes,
and to me, that day was Tuesday, May 20, 2003, when my life was changed forever.
Introduction Robert (Bob) Young, my husband, and I retired from the Reading Hospital and Medical Center. We went once a month to Atlantic City or Delaware Park casinos calling our entertainment a once-a-month getaway day.
The getaway was something that both of us looked forward to. We played the slot machines, even thought we hardly ever won. During the warmer weather we went to the racetracks at the Delaware Park. Our niece’s husband, Ralph would join us on the once-a-month getaway day. All of us would coordinate our schedule. For the month of May we all agreed on Tuesday, May 20.
Sometimes in the morning Bob and I would go out for breakfast with Ralph. On Friday, May 16, Ralph told us during breakfast that he was feeling lousy and Bob immediately said, I hope you’re okay by Tuesday.
That was our getaway day – the day we looked forward to every month.
On Tuesday, May 20, Ralph was a few minutes late. Bob began to wonder if we picked the wrong date. The reason for Ralph’s lateness was due to a phone call from one of his buddies wanting to know if he could play golf that day.
Ralph asked Bob if he was feeling okay, he thought Bob didn’t look the same, and wanted to know if we still wanted to go out for breakfast before going to Delaware Park. Of course, the answer was yes. I didn’t notice anything different about Bob; however, my vision had gotten worse so I miss out on a lot of things. Bob was very excited about the day and never said a word to me about not feeling well. At our ages, we always have some kind of aches or pains going on almost every day.
Bob was basically in good health. He did have a past history of a heart attack in December, 1976, and occasional acid reflux. No medication was taken for acid reflux, but he did carry nitroglycerin tablets, which is a prescription for chest pain to be taken only when needed or if pain got worse. For the past ten years when Bob ate certain foods, it would feel like the food got stuck in the middle of his chest, which then made it hard for him to swallow and continue eating.
Most of the time Bob thought it was acid reflux, since this only happened after he ate, and he had no other symptoms which might suggest heart problems. Bob did wear glasses, but he had no other eye problems and was able to walk without pain. He also had an alert mind, a good memory, and didn’t act like he was seventy-five years old. He loved to flirt with all the girls and never lost his sense of humor. I always felt for his age, Bob was in much better shape then I was when it came to our health history. I have glaucoma, lost my central vision from macular degeneration, my right knee was bad, which eventually led to a knee replacement, and spinal stenosis, which causes a lot of back and leg pain when standing.
Chapter 2
That Day My Life Changed Forever
We were on our way to eat breakfast at Clair’s restaurant. After eating, our next stop was to buy a carton of cigarettes for Ralph, and then head to our final destination, Delaware Park Casino for a day full of fun (or so we thought).
We arrived at the Park around 10:30am as we split up to play the machines. Ralph and I decided to play the nickel machines while Bob played a different kind of game. After I played the nickel machine for a while, I decided to cash in my $63 winnings. Which was odd I would usually lose my money within an hour. After I cashed in my winnings, I would join up with Bob to play our favorite slots together. While we played our machine, Ralph decided to go racetrack since it was opened.
Around 1pm, Bob was playing his favorite game, the Three Line Double Diamond. A year earlier he had a chance to the Double diamond, and he won. He would play the diamond when he lost at the other games. I was sitting next to him and a gentleman was sitting on the other side of Bob. Bob played for the some time with the determination to win. I told Bob he should stop playing the game since he hadn’t won for quite a while. Knowing that if you go to the casino regularly, like we do, you are not going to win often.
While I was deciding if I should move to another machine, I saw a lady, next to the gentleman who sat by Bob, leave. I saw her feed tons of money into the slot machine, and never won one thing. I think this is the reason that she left. So, I went to give it a try. I always loved playing those kinds of games. Thinking, Perhaps it would win for me, or so I hoped.
Just then Bob said, I have to get out my $100 bill since all my twenties are gone.
Those were the last words he uttered.
As I started to get up to move to that slot machine, it was then that I saw Bob lying on the floor. His right arm was above his head in the air. The gentleman sitting next to Bob told me he thought Bob had fallen while trying to get up to play another machine. I called Bob’s name, but there was no response. The look on his face I shall never forget. It was red and purple at the same time as if he had no oxygen. Immediately I shouted to a security guard for help who was standing about five feet away and told him to call 911. I knew something was drastically wrong.
Two security guards from Delaware Park started CPR, with each taking turns until the Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) arrived. Bob was starting to turn blue. I kept saying, I can’t believe this is happening!
Another security guard seated me on a chair about six feet away from Bob. I felt like I was somebody else, not his wife, looking at him. This wasn’t really happening to me. I can’t believe this is happening! We were in an area about 10’x10’ and as I continued to watch, so did many other patrons. I just kept repeating This isn’t happening to me. I can’t believe this is happening!
It seemed like it took forever for the EMTs to arrive, but when they did, it looked like ten people were working on him. While one person was cutting off his sweater and shirt, I thought to myself, How odd that he wore a sweater that was at least twenty years old and tight on him.
Bob had so many nice sweaters. I wondered why he picked that particular sweater. I had so many questions. I couldn’t believe this was happening.
I was told, Bob had a heart attack.
It was explained to me that they were already working on a gentleman from the second floor (we were on the first floor), who was having a heart attack at the same time Bob was having his. Unfortunately, that gentleman passed away. Two men having a heart attack at the same time. Why was the other gentleman worked on first? Why did Bob live and the other gentleman die? Another coincidence?" I thought it was unusual. But so many miracles started to happen as the days ahead turned into weeks.
One person was using a defibrillator while another person was hooking him up to IV’s. I kept seeing things flying through the air. The one question I really wanted to ask was, Why aren’t you taking him to a hospital?
When one of the EMT’s finally came over to me, I had my chance to ask him that question. The answer I got was one that I didn’t expect to get. I was told, Bob’s heart isn’t beating, and we have to stabilize him before he can be moved.
Immediately I thought, If your heart isn’t beating, YOU’RE DEAD.
That day my life changed forever. In the meantime a security guard asked if anyone else came with us, and I told him, Yes, his name is Ralph, and he’s at the racetrack, but he’ll never find us since he doesn’t know where we are.
I was told they would page him right away.
Ralph did find us and told me when
