A TRIBUTE TO A HERO
How do you tell a story about a man whom you have never met? How can you capture a soldier’s testimony when he fails to come home?
Born Sterling Geary, Jr., my grandfather enlisted in the United States Army out of Texas shortly after his son was born. To be honest, little is known about Sterling. However, I believe that he was a remarkable warrior, a family man, and would have become a great father.
Sterling soon became Private First Class Geary, a brilliant soldier assigned to Baker Company, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division during the Korean War.
Times were tricky in the field, and while he and his unit were struggling to drive the enemy away, he and several others were captured, and when events allowed, his team searched for him. They checked every soldier collection point, medical aid stations, and field hospitals. But on the morning below the freezing winter of the year 1950, Sterling was reported Missing in Action.
My grandfather’s story set the attainment class for the men of our lineage, and I am proud. His efforts will be remembered as heroic, for he was a true fighter, the ultimate soldier lost and never found until now.
PFC Geary was born in the summer of 1926, reported missing in action during the Korean Conflict, and died within their camp in 1951.
His remains were eventually recovered, and were buried at the Veterans Memorial during the summer of 2019
Sterling was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and a Purple Heart.
