    Chapter 1

    Blanche

THIS WAS HER favorite part. The part that pulled the whole story together. But after a hundred times of seeing it, Blanche was ready to be done.

But Drake, what do you mean you don’t love me anymore? a woman with blonde wavy hair that trailed down her back, placed a hand on her chest, her eyes filled with sorrow. I’ve done everything you have asked of me. I left my family, my friends, everything behind to be with you. I even quit my job to spend more time with you. How is that not enough? Am I ever going to be enough?

Cut! Cut! the director shouted standing from his spot on the sidelines, Do it again.

The actor and actress gave an exasperated look but didn’t say anything as they took their places again to do the scene over. They had more patience than Blanche could ever have. That was probably why they were up there and she was down here.

Ever since Blanche was a little girl she always wanted to be an actress. Pretending to be somebody she wasn't, getting to wear costumes and have people watch her in awe and amazement. The thrill of being on stage had always been something she had enjoyed.

When she was younger she had wanted to take acting classes but her parents didn't have the money. So she did Community Theater in their small town in Oklahoma. She even tried out for every play from kindergarten to high school. She didn’t always get the lead but her favorite one had been playing Odette in Swan Lake. She knew she had to get out of there and find her way to Hollywood. She spent her teen years waiting tables and doing any side job she could get her hand on until she had the money to leave her small town and move Los Angeles.

She wished someone would have told her how hard it would be when she got there. How expensive everything was, how snooty and full of themselves all of them were. It was impossible to get discovered right off the street because everybody in LA was looking to be discovered. Actors, singers, and models, you name it they were doing it.

So far she had auditioned for tons of commercials, a few sitcoms, and even a movie. But sadly the most she had been able to get was as an extra in a few films. She did almost get a Prozac commercial but they had decided to go with a girl with more experience. How the heck was she supposed to get experience if no one would give her a chance? No, the closest thing to stardom Blanche had come to was being the assistant to one of her idols.

Paulette Declare. At thirty-four she has already been in over a dozen movies, more commercials than Blanche can count. She was to the point where she doesn't have to do anything she doesn’t want to do. Doesn’t want to do nudity? Not a problem. Doesn’t like the co-star? They’ll get her another one. While Blanche had never seen her be that difficult, she actually seemed like the coolest cucumber of all the actors she’s ever met. Most were too full of themselves to be flexible in what goes on on set.

When Blanche applied for the job as her assistant, she never thought she’d get it. She thought Paulette would take one look at her see that she's trying to be an actress too and stick her nose up at her.

Instead, Paulette said, Honey I can just see it in you, you are next big thing. I'm going to help you get you there. Stick with me and you'll go far.

Three years later and she was still there. Paulette has taken her to so many different parties and she's made lots of different connections but not once has she been able to land a big role. Yeah, she gets to be an extra on some of Paulette’s sets and she did get a call back from one show. That didn’t end well. She was so busy with all of Paulette’s schedules that she couldn’t make it to the audition.

Paulette said that Blanche should be picky, that just takes time get her big break. But Paulette would be there to make sure it happened.

Sitting there now observing the set workers watching Paulette, Blanche was envious. She would be there one day, to be loved and adored the way that Paulette was. She just had to have more patience. Her time will come, eventually.

That's a wrap. The director swiveled his hand in the air. An audible sigh of relief could be heard from everyone on the set. It had been a long day for all of them, Paulette doing the same thing over and over again.

Blanche didn't understand what was wrong. She thought Paulette was fantastic. But the director kept stopping Paulette saying it just wasn't quite genuine. Maybe that's what Blanche’s problem was? She didn’t know the difference between good acting and great acting. Or the director was just an ass.

My God, that man is trying to kill me, Paulette said patting her face with the towel that Blanche had handed her. "I swear if he had told me to do it one more time I was going to shove his clipboard so far up his ass, they would need the national geographic to help them find it.

I don't know what his problem. I thought you were fantastic. Blanche looked on at her adoringly.

Paulette gave endearing smile, Aren't you darling. I knew there was a reason I kept you around. Did you happen to get my Evian water? You know, last time you got me Dasani and you know how much I hate me it the taste of it. It’s so plastic. She stuck her tongue out with a grimace.

Her tone was kind of condescending but Blanche brushed it off as just her personality. Actresses, like her, could be a little picky about the stuff they like to drink. Their voices were part of the career after all.

Of course, I did. Just like you asked, Blanche gave her a reassuring smile.

As they left the set and walked into the parking lot Paulette started tapping away on her cell phone. "Did you make sure everything is ready for tonight? I want everything to be perfect. Being gone two weeks is like social suicide but I really need the time off. So you need to make sure everything goes off without a hitch. I don’t want anyone forgetting about me the entire time I am gone.

Blanche rolled her eyes at how dramatic Paulette was being. Don't worry about it I took care of everything. The caterer has already confirmed. The DJ is setting up now as we speak. Everyone who was invited has said they were coming and then some. Even Evan Waters is coming. I know how much you adore him." Blanche gave her a sly smile.

At the mention of Evan Waters, Paulette became a little flustered, pink rising up on her neck and face. With her fingers still typing away on her phone, she said, Is he? I didn’t know he was even invited.

Opening the door to the car, Blanche slid in and started the car. Reaching between the seats, she handed Paulette her latest headshot. "What do you think of this? I updated it to include the recent jobs
