About this ebook

Deut 1:3-8 3 And it came about in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all the Lord had commanded him to give to them, 4 after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and Edrei. 5 Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to expound this law, saying, 6 "You have stayed long enough at this mountain.

7 "Turn and set your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites, and to all their neighbors in Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negev and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.

8 "See, I have placed the land before you; go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to give to your fathers Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob to them and to their descendants after them.

A lot has happened since then. God's pronouncement upon the sons of Israel that they would wander in the wilderness for forty years is ending. It's impressive to see the promise of God fulfilled with such accuracy; Gen 15:15 "Then in the fourth generation they shall return here for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.

A lot has happened since then. God's pronouncement upon the sons of Israel that they would wander in the wilderness for forty years is ending.
Deuteronomy has come to mean “Second Law”. Moses is recounting the Law already given to them forty years ago. These are the guidelines God has set before His chosen people to live by in the land He promised to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob’s descendants.
Moses emphasizes the importance of keeping God’s commandments speaking of the blessings for obedience and the curses to befall if they don’t obey.

    ABOUT THE READING GUIDE

This reading guide introduces a paradigm-shift, a new way of looking at the scriptures. Its sole purpose is to familiarize the reader with the story line. Reflection and a deeper study can follow. What was once a static justified text has been restored to the dynamic and event filled saga of the sons of Israel.

The reading guides consist of straight bible verses copied from the New American Standard Bible. They were written without ethnic or spiritual bias.

Every effort has been made to make this reference guide as complete and accurate as possible. However, there may be mistakes, both typographical and in content layout.

You are free to agree or disagree as to where I made the demarcations. I do not have a patent on the bible.

Therefore, this text should be used only as a general guide and not the ultimate source of The Old Testament Law.

    What’s in the Book?

Hello, my name is Booker T Jones, Jr. I’m the Author of the Unzipping the Law Series.

The Annotated series consists of four bible books; Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. They are produced by the Unzipco Publishing Company.

The Unzipping the Law series cover the Saga of the sons of Israel’s last days of Egyptian bondage to their event filled arrival at the borders of the Promised Land.

This set of Laws were not given to the sons of Lot, Ishmael, Esau, or King David. They were given to the sons of Jacob called Israel ONLY!

Deuteronomy begins in the fortieth year on the first day of the eleventh month after Israel’s departure from Egypt.

The Wilderness years have come to a close and Moses speaks to the sons of Israel, according to all that the Lord had commanded him to give to them.

He undertook to expound where you, the sons of Israel have been and what lies before you. The blessings if you keep His commandments and the curses of disobedience.

Some scholars site this book as the Second giving of the Law, I would like to think this book reviews what has already been given, a bring to your remembrance as you were, begin to receive the promise made to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The theme throughout this book is ‘I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. ‘You shall have no other gods before Me".

Deuteronomy, was reformatted for an inquisitive select audience; the common man, and woman, bible study teachers, pastors, seminary students, university professors, and scholars.

Divorce, cross dressing, first fruits, tithes, blessings and curses, distribution of the land, and Moses’s successor are laid to rest here.

How to Use the Reference Guide?

This reading reference guide Deuteronomy Annotated is intended to be used alongside your bible. Two different type sets are used here.

The numbered typeset represent what the sons of Israel were told to do and the un-numbered text represent what happened to the sons of Israel.

The coded sequential numbers I am calling Theolog numbers, E for Exodus, L for Leviticus, N for Numbers, and D for Deuteronomy.

As a bonus, the Laws are sequentially numbered to facilitate a cross referencing to earlier moral codes such as The Code of Hammurabi, The Code of Ur-Nammu, and The Hippocratic Oath to name a few.

    Examples of Narratives:

    DEUT 9:1-4

1 "Hear, O Israel! You are crossing over the Jordan today to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, great cities fortified to heaven,

2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’

3 "Know therefore today that it is the LORD your God who is crossing over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that you may drive them out and destroy them quickly, just as the LORD has spoken to you.

4 Do not say in your heart when the LORD your God has driven them out before you, ‘Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land,’ but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is dispossessing them before you.

    Examples of Direct Commands:

The authors arbitrary enumeration by no means are they meant to be complete or absolute. You may choose to separate the verses elsewhere. The goal of this exercise is to allow you to read the verses with understanding. The author does not hold a patent on the bible.

    D280-DEUT 23:1

23:1 "No one who is emasculated, or has his male organ cut off, shall enter the assembly of the LORD.

    D281-DEUT 23:2

2 No one of illegitimate birth shall enter the assembly of the LORD; none of his descendants, even to the tenth generation, shall enter the assembly of the Lord.

    D291--DEUT 23:15-16

15 "You shall not hand over to his master a slave who has escaped from his master to you. 16 He shall live with you in your midst, in the place which he shall choose in one of your towns where it pleases him; you shall not mistreat him.

    Deuteronomy1 The Fortieth Year

    A Review of Israel’s Journeys

    Eleven Day’s Journey

1:1 These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel across the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth and Dizahab. 2 It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.

3 And it came about in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that the LORD had commanded him to give to them, 4 after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and Edrei.

5 Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to expound this law, saying, 6 "The LORD our God spoke to us at Horeb, saying, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain.

7 ‘Turn and set your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites, and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negev and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.

8 ‘See, I have placed the land before you; go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to them and their descendants after them.’

9 "And I spoke to you at that time, saying, ‘I am not able to bear the burden of you alone. 10'The LORD your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

11 ‘May the LORD, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand-fold more than you are, and bless you, just as He has promised you! 12 ‘How can I alone bear the load and burden of you and your strife?

13 ‘Choose wise and discerning and experienced men from your tribes, and I will appoint them as your heads.’

14 "And you answered me and said, ‘The thing which you have said to do is good’.

15 "So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and appointed them heads over you, leaders of thousands, and of hundreds, of fifties and of tens, and officers for your tribes.

    Appoint Judges

16 "Then I charged your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your fellow countrymen, and judge righteously between a man and his fellow countryman, or the alien who is with him.
