    The Feud

It was Tuesday, and Jasper Stump had been missing for two days.

Jasper, the eldest of the three Stump brothers, had left home early on Friday to go deer hunting on Widow’s Peak. He was to return home the next day, in time to play poker on Saturday night. When he didn’t show, the youngest brother, Plumb, called Hank, the middle brother, to tell him Jasper was missing.

Hank considered the situation and said, He’s probably shackin’ up with his squeeze, Kitty Comings. He may have been havin’ such a good time with her, he decided not to play poker. Let’s give him one more day before we call in the cavalry.

Plumb agreed, but he knew how unusual it was for Jasper to miss poker.

When Jasper still didn’t show the next day, Hank called Kitty and she confirmed Jasper had not returned from hunting to play poker. She hadn’t heard from him and she was also worried.

Hank asked Plumb to call the sheriff and let him know how he reacted.

Hank and Plumb were younger than Jasper by three and five years, respectively, and they had good reason to worry. Jasper may have run into one of the Roop Brothers, who also hunted on Widow’s Peak. The Stump and the Roop families had been feuding for more than fifty years. During that time, each had killed an opposing family member seven times.

The feud started when Ulysses Stump had shot and killed Thaddeus Roop in a duel over a pregnant whore both men wanted to marry named Moondust Riviera. Now, twelve years had passed without a new killing, and both sides had sworn to avoid the other as much as possible from here on out.

Hank wondered if the truce had ended, and the killing had begun again. He hoped not, but, if the Roops had murdered Jasper, there would be hell to pay.

Plumb lived in a small cabin on the Stump compound across an expansive lake from Hank’s cabin. He came to discuss what to do about Jasper and found his brother on the front porch. He took a seat beside him.

So, Plumb, you called Sheriff Hickok about Jasper being missing, like I asked? Hank said, sucking on a toothpick.

I did. I had to call him twice before he called me back.

How did he react when you told him?

He seemed concerned. He wanted to know when Jasper said he’d be home, and I told him. He thought for a spell and said since he’d been missin’ for more than twenty-four hours, he‘d get a search party together and start combin’ Widow’s Peak. He wasn’t lyin’. I saw him and some others go by on my way over here.

Did he stop to ask you to go with them?

Yeah, but I told him we’d make our own search.

What good old boys did he have with him, who couldn't find a pot to piss in even if they were carryin’ it? Let me guess. Hank said coldly. Lefty Snodgrass was riding shotgun, I’ll bet.

Sho’nuff, Hank, and he had Wynn Nelson, Jim Floormat and Weiner Holler along with them in the back of the SUV.

Well, I guess I'll have to close down the barbershop and get up there. Jasper must be bad hurt or dead, and, judging by the search party, I’m the only hope he has.

You want me to go with you, don’t you?

Naw. I know those woods. I’ll call you if I need you. If Jasper shows up, call me. The reception is bad, but try anyway.

What about the Roops if you go to Widow’s Peak? There's five of them all together and only one of you.

Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead, Hank said in a military drawl. "I've got my Ruger 77M rifle, that should take care of anything I run up against. I’m a crack shot. You know I win the turkey shoot every year. Jasper was a miserable shot, and he never had a
