    Dedicated to all the people

who make the holiday season special.

There are some years when some Christmases go horribly awry. In fact, there are entire years where absolutely everything goes wrong. This story is about one such year and one such Christmas during a once-in-century pandemic—the story of a small remote wilderness town of Pikatan, Alaska, in the days leading up to and during Christmas, in the year of our Lord 2020.

It was December 23rd, two days before Christmas. The winter snow covered the Alaskan countryside, and the tiny remote town of Pikatan was all a buzz as everyone was getting ready for Christmas. Pikatan was a little town so remote in the Alaskan wilderness that people still used horses, snowmobiles, and dogsleds to get around in those days. The town had one main street that supply trucks could drive in and out of so long as the weather was clear enough.

But, if there was one thing the people of Pikatan loved more than Christmas itself, it was the Great Iditarod Dog Sled Races. This time of year, all the dogsled teams would be out practicing for the big race in March. So, all around Pikatan, there would be teams upon teams of dogsleds racing about the Alaskan wilderness.
