Prelude:  Meet Sparkles

Sparkles woke up one day with all her brothers and sisters curled up beside her.  It was so warm and cosy.  What was that smell?  Yes!  Food.  Time to scramble to get her fair share. She bolted up from her cosy place and raced to the bowl, just as it was being put down.  All the other hungry ones raced to the same place, and there began the fighting to get their fair share.  Sparkles pawed Whitey out of the way and gobbled up as much food as was possible.  She felt herself being pushed sideways, and greedy Gingey wolfed down what was supposed to be for Sparkles and then there ensued the greatest of all kitty fights.  The others looked on at the hissing, scratching match and decided that it was safe to get theirs.  Gingey and Sparkles swished this way and that and finally, after the last scratch, decided that they were friends after all, and curled back up beside each other with full bellies, ready for another snooze. 

They were rudely awoken to the sound of voices.  I like that one.  Oh, Mummy, it’s soooo cute!  Can we get it? she heard a small voice say.  Faces peered down at them and showed giant white teeth with big eyes and hair.  Pick it up and see if it’s friendly, a big voice said.  She got swooped up by little hands and plonked down on a pair of legs.  Purr on demand, said a familiar voice, the one that had been feeding her for the past eight weeks. She just purrs on demand, isn’t she sweet?! said that same voice.  Oh Mummy please, I love her! She’s the one, said the little voice, who had big blue eyes.  "Well Sam, if
