Chapter 1 – Hannah Yoder
A cockerel at the corner of the Yoder Farm’s courtyard stretched its legs, glanced skyward, and prepared itself to make its customary morning call. The sun was just peaking above the horizon and the dew-covered grass in the meadow swayed gently in the spring breeze.
COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO!!
Already there was plenty of activity on the farm. Two men – one an elder, the other young and beardless – emerged from a shed at the far end of the courtyard, looking tired and unusually disheveled. "Ugh, schweschder! I’m awake! Can’t you see I’m awake?" she said pleadingly, trying to placate her sister. How could Ruth be so chirpy each morning, she wondered, when she could barely lumber to the kitchen in time for coffee?
There was only one year between Hannah and Ruth and truly – though it could be hard to tell for certain some mornings – they were the closest of friends and confidents. And like all close sister-friends, Ruth had a particularly annoying talent of being able to know almost exactly what Hannah was thinking and
