    Chapter 1 – Hannah Yoder

    A cockerel at the corner of the Yoder Farm’s courtyard stretched its legs, glanced skyward, and prepared itself to make its customary morning call. The sun was just peaking above the horizon and the dew-covered grass in the meadow swayed gently in the spring breeze.

    COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO!!

    Already there was plenty of activity on the farm. Two men – one an elder, the other young and beardless – emerged from a shed at the far end of the courtyard, looking tired and unusually disheveled. Last night, a cow had begun to calf but it hadn’t been an easy delivery. It took many hours and all of Amos Yoder’s skills and knowledge to save both cow and calf but now, praise be to God, all was well.

    Come, young Levi, the old man said, slapping the younger’s back good-naturedly. I think I can already smell Martha’s coffee.

    Neither the cockerel’s crow nor the men’s voices – not even the sweet smell of coffee wafting from the kitchen below – had woken young Hannah Yoder. She was deep in a luxurious sleep, completely involved in her dreams. She had been taking a shoofly pie straight from the oven and placing it on the kitchen table, right in front of an eager ... Levi Hochstetler!

    WAKE UP, SLEEPY! came the call that shook her from this fantasy. "Get up! Get up! Redd up!"

    It was her younger sister, Ruth Yoder, who was doing the calling, and Hannah knew from experience that if she didn’t get up soon she would quickly be contending with some deceptively ferocious blows.

    "Ugh, schweschder! I’m awake! Can’t you see I’m awake?" she said pleadingly, trying to placate her sister. How could Ruth be so chirpy each morning, she wondered, when she could barely lumber to the kitchen in time for coffee?

    There was only one year between Hannah and Ruth and truly – though it could be hard to tell for certain some mornings – they were the closest of friends and confidents. And like all close sister-friends, Ruth had a particularly annoying talent of being able to know almost exactly what Hannah was thinking and
