    Rumspringa. For the Amish community, it was a time of self discovery for many of the amish youth. It was a time where a certain amount of adolescent rebelling was allowed and even tolerated with the fear of Shunning. In some Amish communities, it was even allowed for the youth to venture into the modern world. They were given a choice: stay and embrace what the modern world had to offer or return and be baptized into the Amish faith.

    Rachel Beiler belonged to one such Amish community. The season of Rumspringa was fast approaching. Up until a few weeks ago, she had been positively thrilled to go. Now, she had serious doubt. Hands fumbling to hang the daily wash, she found her eyes drawn to the milking barn. There Peter stood, bucket in hand, as he conversed with her father. They both suddenly turned their gazes upon her. She felt her cheeks turned a deep shade of scarlet and quickly returned focus to the wash.

    Rachel Beiler. What is the matter, child? A voice pulled her eyes up once more. It was Papa’s second wife: Emily. She had paused her current activity, turning her worried eyes upon the young girl.

    It is nothing. I am quite well. She murmured, leaning over to pick up the empty wicker basket. Balancing it on her hip, she turned and re-entered her home. Setting the basket down next to the back door, she wiped the sweat from her brow away. The strings that held her bonnet in place itched terribly. But she dared not remove it lest Papa catch her.
