The Microsoft Excel (Ms-Excel) application is one of the many applications in the Microsoft Office package. Ms-Excel is used in offices, schools, and organizations to create financial and accounting sheets and documentation such as balanced sheet, profit, and loss profit. You can also add some graphics and designs in your worksheet or documents.
Course Objectives
In this Ms-Excel course, we will utilize a practical or hands-on approach to show how you can create simple Excel documents or worksheets or workbook with pre-formatted texts, tables and adding some graphics and designs. You will learn the skills of editing texts, formatting texts, creating tables, adding designs to your workbook. You will also learn to do some financial calculations at the end of this course.
Pre-Requirements and Target Audience
The course is designed for both beginners who do not have any prior background in Ms-Excel, and for intermediate level people who also wish to extend their practical/hand-on skills and knowledge.
To achieve or fully take advantage of this course, you need to have some prior knowledge Windows operating system environments.
It is important you have a laptop or desktop computer with the Ms-Excel application installed, preferably, a laptop with Windows 10 and with Office365.

This section of Microsoft Excel Quick Reference gets you started with some fundamental tasks that you will use frequently in Excel. You can use the procedures and ideas that you learn here in many of your Excel operations.
What is Microsoft Excel (Ms-Excel)?
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application program created by Microsoft. It helps you do some calculations (financial and otherwise), graphics, tables and macro programming using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
All work is done in a workbook. The pages within workbooks are called worksheets (simply called sheets). There can be as many or as few worksheets within a workbook as you need.
Starting Ms-Excel
You can start Excel in several ways. These are:
- Option 1: Start Ms-Excel Using the Start/Windows Button
Click Start (Windows ) button and a list of programs pops-up
Look for the Excel
logo and click it.
If a window pops-up, under New
section, click Blank Workbook
, and a new empty Excel Workbook will be opened. Otherwise, a blank Workbook will be opened.
- Option 2: Starting Ms-Excel Using the Search Box
Move and click in the Type here to search
box near the windows logo at the bottom left of your computer or laptop.
Type Excel
and a separate window with a few suggested programs or apps pops-up
Look for the Excel
app and logo , and click it, and a new window pops-up.
Under New
section, click Blank Workbook
, and a new empty Excel Workbook will be opened.
