This book is amazing. I had so many ‘aha’ moments. Although not really a self-help book, I’ve learnt so much about myself from Cillín, I’m now more comfortable being me and more aware of my personal rules, I didn’t realise I had so many! The wisdom Cillín shares has enabled me to become more resilient, a better leader, and most importantly, a better parent.
Luke Johnstone. Director, Double-O Consulting
Working with Cillín as my coach over the last few years, he has taught me many tips, tricks, technique, and strategies to inspect and learn about myself so that I can grow in my own leadership journey. This book is an amazing toolkit collection of those teachings and I, for one, am extremely grateful to have it all put together in one place. I can see that my own copy of this book is going to be well-thumbed through and dog-eared before too long. Cillín’s storytelling and real life examples make this book memorable and, most of all, enjoyable to read.

When I started writing this book, I had every intention of finishing it in two weeks. It made perfect sense. I knew what I wanted to say and how to say it… or so I thought. Nine months later and I find myself still writing the final words.
In reality, this book has been in the making for the last eight years, and as I look back on that journey, there are so many people who have contributed. The amount of people to thank will always be too much to capture in a few pages, so for those I haven’t mentioned, please accept my apologies and my heartfelt thanks.
There would be no journey without my parents, Ann and Liam Hearns. Thank you for the freedom to choose and for supporting me in my decisions, even when they weren’t the right ones. I often reflect on the headaches I caused you now that I am a father, and I admire how you navigated those rocky shores.
I am blessed to have two brothers and two sisters, all of whom have been an inspiration to me.
To Liam, my older brother, you gave me the courage to leave the shores of Ireland, explore the world, and expect more from life.
My younger sisters, Sinéad and Aisling, are two of the strongest women I know. Both are hugely successful in their chosen fields and care deeply about family and friends. They are two beautiful souls I am proud to know.
Lastly, my younger brother, Eamonn. Eamonn has always followed his heart and is one of the most value-driven people I have ever met. I feel honoured to be his brother. Eamonn is the kind of guy that everyone wants to be their best friend, and I am one of only four who can call him a brother.
As I mention in the introduction, my journey really started by the chance encounter with a man named David Hasib. I only knew David for a few short weeks, but his kindness and generosity has had a direct influence on my life, even over twenty years later.
I wouldn’t be able to complete my thanks without including the early coaches in my life, Leanne Babcock, Michelle Dalley, and Mal Winnie. Thank you for helping me get started on my coaching journey.
There were two people who came along at a pivotal time in my life who need special mention: Dr David Keane and Moira Mallon, two Irish expats living in New Zealand. I attended David’s ‘The Art of Deliberate Success’ programme, and it was my first exposure to a personal development programme. David was extremely generous with not only his time and his advice, but also his encouragement and belief that I could achieve my dream.
Soon after meeting David, Moira came into my life and helped me shape my future plans through her sage questioning and endless encouragement.
I remember when I quit my job and started coaching. I was hugely excited, but quickly realised that not many people knew me as a coach, and people weren’t exactly beating down my door. Therefore, a huge thanks must go to Natasha Steadman, my first client. Thank you for giving me the opportunity and for putting your faith in me to be your coach. It means more to me than you will ever know.
There were a lean few months, but slowly things started to take off, and the people who made this possible are Blair Loveday, Claire O’Rourke, Sarah Gibson, Grant Robinson, Justine Carrington, Noel Dykes, and Simon Anderson.
Anything in life I’m passionate about, I throw myself into with gusto. Leadership and coaching are no different, and I have been studying everything I could get my hands on. Two people who have been influential in my studies are Richard Bolstad and Yulia Kurusheva. Both are amazing trainers, coaches and authors, and have really opened my eyes to creating therapeutic change through Neuro Linguistic Programming. Not only are they both experts in their field, they are two of the most genuine, warm-hearted people you will ever meet. Thank you both for awakening in me the passion for a subject that will keep my nose in a book for the rest of my life.
I would like to thank all of my clients who I have had the privilege of working with over the years. I can think of no greater reward than being trusted to walk alongside you into the most vulnerable areas of life and be part of a life-changing breakthrough. I have grown so much as a person, and often feel that I have learned more from you than I could ever offer you. Thank you for trusting me to be your coach, I am humbled by your strength and courage. It has been an honour.
I would also like to thank my illustrator, Kim Quirke, for the amazing illustrations throughout the book that really capture the meaning I have tried to portray through words. And thanks need to go to my editor, Calee Allen, for her keen eye, insightful suggestions, and her endless patience in crafting the final work. Any mistakes in the writing are mine and mine alone.
I have saved this last acknowledgement for a very special person in my life, my beautiful and long-suffering wife, Louise. You have been such a strong influence in my life, it’s difficult to put into words. Your support and your belief in me gave me the courage to start on this journey, and it is only your endless sacrifices and infinite patience that has made the writing of this book possible. The words that I shared on our wedding day still ring true, even to this day.
You are my rock when I need support,
My clown when I need to laugh,
My Zen garden when I need peace,
And my boot when I need a kick in the arse.
Thank you. I love you.

‘First, Lead Yourself by Cillín Hearns certainly isn’t the stereotypical paint by numbers approach to coaching books. Instead it is full insightful stories of someone I have got to know but didn’t know. A book about how to become extraordinary for the average person. Open, Read, Think.’

‘I have had the pleasure of working with Cillín Hearns in my professional career and I was very excited to read this book. This is an inspirational and helpful book indeed! His approach is very practical and there is something for everyone to take away from this book whether you are dealing with work, colleagues, kids or many other aspects of your personal life. I enjoyed how Cillín was able to relate his personal journey into the books narrative; it showcased his honest and pragmatic approach to life and used real life scenarios to demonstrate methods and ways to improve one’s self. This isn’t a book you would read only once—this is a book that you will hang on to and pull out time and time again. I highly recommend to friends and colleagues alike.’

‘Too often books about leadership jump right in at the high level. Generally the author is a success in his particular sphere of influence and as such anticipates his readership will also be operating at a similar level. Seldom is there a book about leadership that recognises the single most important factor; leadership of self. In First, Lead Yourself, Cillín draws from years of experience in the corporate world where his leadership and coaching has assisted many in getting started on their leadership path. His book is a reflection of that graft and journey. Written with unapologetic vulnerability and full of useful, tangible tactics that we can all use to improve or begin our leadership experience, this book is so much more than just a leadership instruction manual

‘An insightful journey in finding out more about yourself and understanding what is important in your life. Cillín makes this come alive through practical exercises that help to develop your self-understanding and values. One of the many aspects of this guide I like is that once you have read the whole book you can re-read individual chapters that you wish to develop and get an even deeper understanding. A must read for anyone wanting to go through self-development and understanding so that you can better work with, and lead, others.’

Foreword
E
veryone should be their own CEO.
Today, whether we like it or not, we live in a world where anything can be operated like a business or everyone is like an independent company. The only difference is—all the commercial companies are limited liability, but our own company is unlimited. We need to use our time, reputation, credit and everything else we can to assure success.
We need to lead ourselves like we would lead a business: understand our core strengths and weaknesses, build collaboration with others, create our own products and services, maintain our personal reputation, focus on better cost and benefit, etc. All the concepts, exercises and methods in this book come from Cillín’s professional practice and have been proven many times in the real world.
In the past, we used these skills to lead a real business.
Now, you can apply them to lead yourself.
I am delighted to have had the opportunity to read the early draft of this book. To
