    Sophie hung a gold bauble in an empty spot on her Christmas tree and stood back to admire her work. Does it look like there’s too much gold? she asked Kate, who was sitting cross-legged on the floor untangling a strip of tinsel.

    Kate looked up and said, Looks fine to me.

    Mac?

    What? Mac was stretched out on the lounge flicking absently through a magazine.

    The Christmas tree. What do you think?

    Mac looked up, shrugged, and said, Looks good. She went back to her magazine. Sophie sighed. No one loved Christmas as much as she did. Her friends could at least show a bit of enthusiasm, especially since the decorations would make the Christmas lunch they were having in her apartment so much more festive. She swapped a gold bauble for a red felt ribbon, considered swapping it back, but decided to leave it. She’d have another look tomorrow to make sure it was perfect. Thinking of tomorrow, she said to Kate, Are you coming by after work to help me with the nibblies?

    I can’t.

    Kate…

    Kate picked at a knot in the tinsel. I’m sorry, Soph. I’ve got a huge job I need to get out before Christmas.

    Can’t it wait until the new year?

    The client wants to take his financials away with him to show some potential investors. Apparently he’s taking them away to Bali for two weeks to butter them up, and he’s flying out Christmas morning.

    You’re kidding? Mac said. Is this the same one who whinges about how much you charge him?

    Yes, but he brings a lot of business to us, so we need to keep him happy.

    What about keeping your friends happy? Sophie asked.

    I’ll come around on Christmas Eve.

    Sure, Sophie said, removing a candy cane and handing it to Kate.

    I promise, Kate said. I promise no work on Christmas Eve. She handed Sophie the strands of tinsel and set about opening the remaining boxes of decorations. Hey, she said, brandishing a snow globe. This is amazing. She gave the globe a shake, dislodging the plastic snow and watching it settle over the diorama of
