Con la intención de reconsiderar la construcción sureña del género que se muestra en la ficción y en las películas del siglo XX nace este volumen. Tres aspectos conceptuales guían la investigación. En primer lugar, las mujeres sureñas pueden trabajar desde y contra los discursos de género de su sociedad a través de las prácticas culinarias. En segundo lugar, a través de la amistad femenina, las mujeres pueden transgredir su lugar prescrito por el patriarcado. En tercer lugar, para infundir la construcción de género las mujeres tienen que desafiar la protección patriarcal y desobedecer las reglas de confinamiento de la feminidad en el espacio doméstico. Así, este volumen cuestiona los efectos materiales de los mitos sureños sobre las construcciones y las negociaciones de la condición de mujer sureña contra las normas blancas, masculinas y heterosexistas de la cultura sureña.
