Hope in a World Gone Mad - Gary Roe
Grief in a World Gone Crazy
Are you scared, anxious, and grieving?
Chances are you’re dealing with a deep, personal loss of some kind. Perhaps several.
On top of that, we live in a world gone crazy. Everything is upside down. Things seem unpredictable, uncertain, and unsafe.
We’re battling our own fear and anxiety, while immersed in a world of confusion, panic, and terror. We’re grieving and living in a world of grief.
Who am I?
Hi. My name is Gary. I serve as an author, speaker, and grief specialist.
You can find my story at the end of this book. For now, I’ll just say that my life has been a war.
In childhood, I experienced sexual abuse, emotional abuse, bullying, isolation, and the deaths of family members and friends. My mom slipped away into mental illness, had several breakdowns, and attempted suicide. My dad died suddenly in front of me. All this occurred by the time I was 15.
As a teen, I made a choice to heal and grow through loss and pain. That eventually led to an adult life of helping other hurting, grieving people heal and grow.
Life didn’t get any easier in adulthood. The losses kept coming, piling up over the years. Some of them were debilitating.
Yet, I’m tremendously grateful for the healing and growth I’ve experienced along the way. I’m living proof that anyone can recover, adjust, and learn to use pain for good.
The most important thing about me is that I am a follower of Jesus Christ. He is my life and my hope. Apart from Him, I can do nothing.
Since one of my goals is to write from my heart to yours, my faith is going to be all over these pages. If you’re of a different faith or claim no faith at all, I hope you’ll stick with me and open your heart to the conversation that follows.
We’re all human. We all hurt. We all have hearts that can be broken. We all have longings that cry out from deep within us.
Stay with it. Read to the end. Stay open. See what you think.
I write from personal and professional experience. My vocational mix of grief specialist, theologian, and former missionary, pastor, and hospice chaplain all come into play. I hope you find the following pages comforting, encouraging, and healing.
Most of all, I pray that you will come out of this book with sure and certain hope.
A Conversation of Grief and Hope.
This book is written as a conversation. This is not the verbatim record of an actual interaction, but rather an adaptation of numerous conversations I’ve had with many grieving hearts.
Though every loss and grief process are individual and unique, there are some common patterns that we all experience. Battling fear, anxiety, and uncertainty in grief is something everyone encounters. There are times when we all struggle to find hope.
Our conversation in this book doesn’t delve into the intricacies of the grief process. The grief journey is arduous, frustrating, confusing, angering, and packed full of sadness, guilt, regret, and depression. A book could easily be written about each thing in this list.
In this book, we move quickly to the root of all the thoughts and emotions we struggle with. These things come from inside us - from our hearts.
When I use the word heart, I’m referring to what the Bible means by heart. It includes both our soul and our spirit. Our soul encompasses our minds, our emotions, and our will. Our spirit is the deepest part of us, the essence of who we are.
So, if you’re looking for an in-depth analysis of the grief process, this book isn’t it. This book is about discovering hope - real hope, lasting hope, eternal hope - amid terrible grief in a world gone
