CHAPTER 1
Setting Up a Success Team
TO GET PROFIT WITHOUT RISK, EXPERIENCE WITHOUT DANGER, AND REWARD WITHOUT WORK, IS AS IMPOSSIBLE AS IT IS TO LIVE WITHOUT BEING BORN.
—A.P. GOUTHERY
What is a Success Team?
A Success Team is a group of people who support each other’s pursuit of short-term goals. The objective of the team is to ensure that everyone on the team achieves what they say they want to accomplish. While this may seem like a simple goal without the backing of a team success
is frequently an elusive result.
A core aspect of a Success Team is to support and check in with other members and ensure that everyone stays on course
towards their goal. If a team member’s goal is long-term (i.e. it will take more than 12 months to achieve), the team works with its members to break down the long-range goal into bite-sized
short-term goals. For example, a long-term goal may be my company will have a gross profit of $1,000,000 within five years
. This can be broken down into, my company will have a gross profit of $100,000 within a year
and my company will have a gross monthly profit of $10,000
.
These short-term goals can be considered milestones, using our example my company will have a gross profit of $100,000 within a $100,000 within a year
is the milestone. Milestones can then be broken down further into checkpoints,
in our example my company will have a gross profit of $10,000
is an example of a checkpoint.
A milestone needs to be observable and measurable (which we’ll get into more depth later). To illustrate my point, I’m reminded of an adage that asks the question:
How do you eat an elephant?
The answer is: One bite at a time.
It’s important to break down our goals into manageable milestones and checkpoints. Helping you achieve these milestones and hit your checkpoints is what Success Teams are for.
While a Success Team can be formed for any reason, throughout the book we will use the example of a Success Team formed to attain difficult computer industry certifications. Again, you may use these principles to accomplish anything that seems out of reach and is something you have immense passion for.
One of the first things a Success Team needs to uncover is the level of passion you have for your goal. As you will discover, saying you want something and actually wanting it are often two different things. It requires an intense amount of self-reflection to separate the two. For example, many of our peers may want to buy a large house or expensive car, when we look deeper at their reasons for wanting this, it’s mainly to impress others. On the other hand, we have peers that want to create a business because they have identified a way to help others. We’ve found that those
