The 36 Laws of Happiness - Dan Desmarques

Chapter 1 - The Relationship Between Happiness and Freedom

Happiness never comes from finding the solution to our problems, but from understanding the cause that gave rise to them. This is where true awareness arises. For consciousness is a realization of a practical power—the power to alter our destiny, and thus succeed in recreating a new life in accordance with our desires.

This is only possible when we understand the cycles of cause and effect, and are able, not to neutralize the causes, but rather to choose which causes we want to produce effects, knowing in advance which effects we are attracting.

For this, consciousness needs a fertile ground, composed of tranquility, learning and motivation, which rarely happens if we have our mind controlled by the forces of ego, worry and fear.

Ego, worry and fear cannot be ignored, because they have their own causes that keep such emotions in existence. Therefore, awareness is always gained between these emotions, not after these emotions manifest.

In other words, 30 minutes a day is all you need to be able to read books like this one, meditate, and visualize the life of your dreams, thus exercising your tranquility, learning and motivation.

At some point, you will discover another 30 minutes of your day, whether in the morning or at night. And eventually, you will make decisions in your life that seem irrational to outsiders, but make perfect sense to you, as they allow you more dedication to these three elements.

During my life, I went through immense difficulties, and at one point I was without hope, without enough money to change my life, and without alternatives. The only alternative I had was to apply what I am explaining in this book. And that's why my books always have results in other people's lives. These books come from personal experiences.

Every day I read a little, and that little became a lot. Because out of the seven jobs I held, I could always read ten or fifteen pages of books on public transport, and while waiting for the next bus.

The motivation for learning grew, and I began to sacrifice sleep to read more.

During those years, I slept only three hours a day, and sometimes I didn't sleep at all. I would sleep on the bus, or save all the tiredness for the one free day of the week I had, and then sleep all day.

This was, without a doubt, a miserable life, but the passion for learning was great enough to keep me happy. And despite that, over time, I felt a big separation between the knowledge I had, and the world around me, which was totally absorbed by appearances.

People, in general, live only according to what they know, and they allow themselves to remain in the emotions transmitted by the environment and by the value system of that environment. So everything else is ignored by them, including books that can change their lives, because they don't even believe in those changes.

With me, the opposite happened. So I had to meditate more often in order to mentally balance the pressure between the outer world and the inner world of knowledge that I had accumulated, and which tended to increase rapidly.

I also moved house several times, trying to save more money, which was then spent on more books.

I bought many more books than I could read. Most of these books have never been read. They had to be abandoned when the distance between the physical world and my mental world was already so great that I created a magical change in my life.

This change appeared, apparently, only with a job offer in another country. But it was a change that would modify my way of thinking and my decisions from that moment on.

Just five years later, I had my own business and was traveling the world.

I never needed a job again. And now I sleep and work when I want, for as long as I want.

These changes took years to happen, and there were many more challenges in between. That is why I must add that hope and persistence are also very important in this journey.

Law 1: Your inner power is increased through a balance between tranquility, learning and motivation, which are reinforced through hope and persistence.

Chapter 2 - How Honesty Frees the Soul

Knowledge is never accepted if it is not recognized and, for this reason, nothing can match the teachings that life experience obliges.

People always learn in two ways: voluntarily or by force.

What I mean by this is, whatever you run away from will often appear in front of you when you least expect it. Maybe you don't like to fight, and that waiter who always smiles to you, one day is in a bad mood and decides to start a fight, and precisely when you are too tired to respond.

It may also be a trusted friend who insults you in a way you didn't expect.

I have been insulted and betrayed by so many people, and so many that I can conclude that human beings, with rare exceptions, are worthless, and cannot be helped or trusted with anything.

On the other hand, I have to analyze the reason for these events, and that's when I find that no one has ever insulted or betrayed me without my permission. That is, a person can say I like you a lot, or You can always trust me, but it's up to me to decide whether that's true or not.

Today I don't make the same mistakes I did before. Because what people tell me is of zero importance to me. I observe their behavior and that is enough to know whether I can trust what they say or not.

In fact, I've come to realize that most people have a weak self-awareness. That is, they believe they are people they are not.

If a woman always lies and then starts crying when I call her a liar and say it's impossible to trust what she tells me, she clearly doesn't know herself as well as I do.

The same can be said of the friend who betrayed me after having warned him of all the challenges we will face in working together. If he does precisely what I predicted he could do, and in the exact way he said it would never happen, then again I can say that I know him better than he does.

The problem with these weak-minded individuals is that they make stupid decisions all the time, and because they refuse to improve their personality, and to be more honest, they learn to manipulate others and lie better.

They believe they have to lie and manipulate people precisely because they themselves are unable to change. And of course, as they observe the world through the same filters they use to assess reality, they always expect others to do what they do.

They end up being people without any value for any situation.

When I say worthless for any situation, I am being very explicit and not general.

For example, I had a cleaning lady who three times changed the dates she would clean my apartment, and I always agreed with the changes she made. Except the third time.

When I agreed to the changes, but she didn't show up at the apartment, I didn't call her again to ask why. Patience for imbeciles has limits.

Most people have a hard time committing to even the most basic agreements, such as dates, and even if those dates are written in messages and can be
