About this ebook

Excerpts from the book:
...The siege of Stargard lasted for many days with varying success, with heavy casualties on both sides. The Veneti fiercely resisted the outnumbered Saxons. Thanks to the network of underground passages, they got out of the city at night in small squads and tormented the enemies with constant raids and sabotage.
Volkolaks also did not stand aside. Astrid managed to persuade Knud and Trude to arrange a tag on which she told about her vision. On the tag, it was decided to come to the aid of the Lutici, but to act by raids.
The enraged Meister ordered several catapults to fire at the ‘winged pagan girls’. But Sirin and Gamayun deftly dodged the deadly shells.
The constant night raids of the Volkolaks, the resilience of the defenders of city and the birds-goddesses soaring over the battlefield have greatly weakened the morale of the knights. Archers and infantrymen, recruited from common peasants, townspeople and hunters, were unhappy.
It is not known how long the bloody siege would have continued if one of the days had not occurred a turning point that decided the outcome of the battle.
On that day, the invaders again tried to capture the rebellious city, despite the desperate resistance of the Veneti. Gamayun and Sirin hovered over the battlefield. However, Eir and Magura were forced to remain in Stargard in order to help the many wounded.
Hogerfest, determined at all costs to bring down the pagan creatures so hated by him, having lost control of himself, shouted in the heat of the battle to the mechanics controlling the catapults:
“Shoot this flying creature, shoot! We must shoot them down, we must! Otherwise, the Veneti's fighting spirit cannot be undermined!”
Finally, the shells that had been flying into Vyrajians so far unsuccessfully reached their target. A stone from one of the catapults struck Gamayun right in the chest...

    Chapter 1

Great fire god Semargl! I glorify your bright deeds, which sanctify our altars with the power of the bright gods. You are the god of Prav and Yav, the Holy Fire that connects us with the Blue Sky. You bless the sacrifice and offerings of the earthly clan with your living flame, sanctify utensils and amulets cleanse the bodies and souls of the people. My winged guardian with your shade protect the dwelling of my clan — my home. To avoid us troubles and misfortunes, difficulties and enmity. Be in every nook and cranny from Midnight to Noon, from East to West in every room, cellar, and attic. Shine on me near every window so that the gods from heaven can see the house of Dazhbog’s grandchild. Let Fire-Svarozhich, your brother, be on the path of my life! I will praise you in every rite, I will teach children and grandchildren to honor your grace, great fire god! Glory to Semargl![1]

While Grandmeister Voltingen was embodying a campaign to the island of Rügen, which subsequently ended in failure, Meister Friedrich von Hogerfest had his own plans of conquest. Namely: he was preparing for a campaign against Stargard.

Remembering perfectly well how hard the Saxons were rebuffed last time, the Meister paid special attention to the technical equipment of the troops. The best mechanics and blacksmiths developed long-range and more advanced catapults for him.

Although ten years had passed, the images of the barbarian gods of Veneti, flying in the sky over the battlefield on iron birds and in golden chariots, still clearly stood in Friedrich's memory. At night, in his dreams, the faces of birds with female faces hovering over the battle came to him. The Meister clearly understood that the upcoming battle was not just a battle between the Order of the Golden Cross and the pagans Veneti, but above all — a battle between two religions.

Perun and Svarog, who became blacksmiths in Velegosh and Stargard, under the names Perkun and Svarg, taught the Slavs to create durable weapons, armor and catapults. Eir and Magura, who became healers, taught women to make miraculous medicines from herbs. And other Vyrajians, if necessary, intended to fight on the side of the Slavs, like ordinary warriors... The upcoming battle promised to be bloody and cruel.

In Stargard, thanks to the observations of Sirin, people had long known that the Saxons were preparing another campaign.

Prove, known as Prov and who became Voivode in this city, told Knyaz of Lutici: a new campaign of the Saxons is coming soon, another bloody war is coming... Knyaz listened to Voivode's opinion. Moreover, the scouts also reported an increase in the activity of the Saxons on the captured bank of the Alba River. And Knyaz of Lutici gave the order to prepare the city for defense...
