Introduction:
Before beginning the story, it is important to give some background. The setting begins in 2008 when I was 26 years old, and it was the middle of the third time I had been in Haiti. The first time was for two weeks in 2004 with a small humanitarian mission group based out of Michigan who were friends of family. I had wanted to go on some kind of humanitarian trip abroad at the time and the opportunity arose to go to Haiti. It was not necessarily my first choice but I jumped at the opportunity because I was adventurous and motivated, never having left continental North America before. Those two weeks in 2004 mainly consisted of being a foreman for the painting of a clinic in a small coastal town with hired locals. Some had some fluency in English and I had some fluency in French; it was enough to make friends and return for a second time in early 2006 for two months for the purpose of learning French-Creole while tutoring a physically handicapped local who was fluent in English, and also helping to teach English classes on Saturdays until I realized I didn’t have the patience to be a language teacher. In any case, by the end of the second trip, I was able to have a basic conversation in the local language and had made friends in and explored the beautiful town and area.
After my second trip, I spent most of 2006 and 2007 as an archaeologist in Ontario, Mississippi, and other parts of Eastern North America. In early 2008 I decided to go back to Haiti for a third time. The original humanitarian organization I had worked with previously had split into two, so I chose to volunteer with the organization which gave me more free time and freedom. I was very independent and had a vague role as an assistant supervisor of a largely abandoned orphanage, which in reality consisted of making sure food and necessary supplies are purchased without corruption. It was a great way to become more fluent in the language and learn about the local culture firsthand. It also seemed to have made a positive
