American Pope: Scott Hahn and the Rise of Catholic Fundamentalism

About this ebook
As arguably the most influential voice in American Catholicism, the vision that Scott Hahn offers in his works, read by millions of Catholics throughout the world, is one of the most formative in American Catholicism. His numerous books and public speaking engagements are shaping the American Catholic Church in a uniquely powerful manner. This work demonstrates that the Catholic vision that Hahn claims to be providing his audience is, in fact, always quite different from the one he actually presents. What he coins as Catholic faithfulness is instead a straightforward and damning Catholic fundamentalism. As this vision is delivered to millions of the faithful who look to Hahn as a trustworthy guide to an authentic life of Catholic faith, American Pope acts as a critical analysis of his work.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Martin egregiously misreads the 1993 Pontifical Biblical Commission document, which complained about those who read the Bible literally. In reality, that is referring to the vast majority of biblical scholars who represent an exegetical style that Dr. Hahn does not espouse. Hahn actually appreciates and uses the three spiritual senses (moral, anagogical, and allegorical) in addition to the literal. To be clear, Hahn is anything but a fundamentalist since he not only believes, in keeping with the Catholic Church, that Sacred Scripture is inerrant, but also accepts Tradition and the Magisterium as normative (all of which is in keeping with Vatican II's Dei Verbum). In short, this hit piece of a book is worthy of the virtual dumpster, but not worthy of your time.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5We are all accustomed to academics who cannot write very well. Here is one who cannot even read, which is generally thought de rigueur. It isn't even ancient or foreign or particularly complex texts he struggles to understand but basic contemporary English prose. It leaves the strong impression of an implacable WILL to misunderstand and misrepresent his subject matter in order to force it into the Procrustean bed of an absurd preconceived theory. That this pusillanimous little screed supposedly represents research which was granted a PhD should be profoundly embarrassing to all concerned.
