    Ada Mae

Did you get it all? Scarlet asked, hunkering down behind the wheel of the golf cart.

There was a cool breeze at midmorning, and the rain had finally cleared and the ground dried up enough that Scarlet could make her escape from the confines of the house. The rain always stiffened her joints and wreaked havoc with her allergies, and if you added that to ninety-six years of good living, sometimes all you could do was curl up with a hot toddy and daytime soaps.

But the rain had cleared and her joints had loosened, and Ada was out of school for spring break. It seemed like the perfect time for the two of them to escape and have a little adventure. Lord, did she miss the adventures. Her brain was much more capable of adventure than her body was. But such was the way of life. And she knew her time clock was ticking down faster and faster, day by day.

Which was why she’d had an urgency to spend time and share stories with Ada. There were some things in life that were just worth remembering.

Scarlet’s ball cap was pulled low and her oversized sunglasses covered half her face. Her camouflage pants and matching shirt were offset by the bright white of her sneakers. She’d capped off her look with her signature bright red lipstick. She’d been wearing the same shade of red for more than seventy-five years. In her mind, if Hitler hated red lipstick while he’d been alive, then he must hate it even more while he was burning in hell.

I got it, Ada Mae said, bumping the screen door open with her behind and tugging the giant picnic basket out onto the top step. She’d also decided camo was the best choice for this occasion, though Ada’s came in the form of a romper with pink bows on each shoulder.

Fashion was the armor that was needed to survive everyday life—at least, that’s what Scarlet had been taught during her time spying for the Resistance during the war. She’d impressed the same lesson upon Ada in dressing right for every occasion. Of course, the bright pink hair bow she’d added to her ponytail was like a beacon on a lighthouse, but she had to give her points for style.

Scarlet hopped out of the golf cart and went to help Ada, and somehow, the two of them managed to heft the basket in the back of the cart with the other supplies they’d nicked from the house.

By the time the two of them got in the front seat, they were both panting for breath, Ada’s hair bow was barely hanging on, and Scarlet’s sunglasses were skewed.

The screen door opened and Verna stuck her head out. Her mouth was stern and she looked to be getting her temper up. What are you two up to? Where did my groceries go?

Hold on tight! Scarlet yelled, pressing her foot to the accelerator.

The cart jerked forward and Scarlet’s cap flew off the back of her head. Ada whooped with glee as they sped off the pavement and down the
