    Some Bad News

    On the B Plane

In the Universe, a bright ball of white light (orb) passed through the Milky Way and into our solar system. It moved into the earth's atmosphere; passing through its protective ozone layer, then its fresh clouds and into the city of Los Angeles.

It was a hazy-gray noon. Outside of a shopping center parking lot, an ambulance was parked near a fast food chain. L.A.P.D. dispatch came through to E.M.S. on a location of an emergency nearby.

    Roaming Beyond

An E.M.T. confirmed that location to dispatch and quickly turned to his eating partner; a paramedic who was occupied with music.

Hey! We've got one! 5210 9th Street and Maple, let's go! the E.M.T. shouted. His eating partner swallowed his last bite and yanked his earbuds off. The sirens sounded.

On the Other Side of Town...

At the Galleria shopping mall, Mom was on her cell phone with Dad. She was standing in line to buy fine sweets from a Chocolatier, keeping her eye out for a specific confection through the display glass. The store was nicely decorated with a red and gold Valentine's Day theme of the usual paper cupids and hearts.

Let's just say it went well! She'll tell you all about it when you get home.

Well, I can't wait to see her, Dad said.

He was sitting at his desk; in his work office.

Yes, I'm glad she's home early. I just wish this weather wasn't so damn awful! Mom complained. On the other end of the line, Dad got up from sitting. He walked up to the window, observing the rainy weather. Suddenly, it thundered.

    Yeah, it's bad over here.

Hey- I'm at the store right now, what do you want for dinner? Mom lied, portraying she was running a different kind of errand; concealing her last minute Valentine's Day shopping.  The  line was finally moving and Mom wasn't. The two women who stood behind her were slightly annoyed with her.

Ma'am? one of them said, hinting for her to move up.

Sorry, she whispered to them and closed the gap in the line. Okay...  Sure, that sounds good- See you when you get home, Mom awkwardly responded. Dad fidgeted through paperwork.

Alright, I love you, he said.

Love you too, she ended her call, then sighed after looking at the slow moving line.

    Townhome

At that very moment, Kevin and Olivia were in the kitchen. They tried to get a hold of me again.

I don't want to leave another message. You try calling her, maybe she'll talk to you, Kevin begged.

Olivia shook her head, I can't believe you! she yelled, pacing.

She quickly calmed herself by breathing in deep. If she doesn't pick up, I'll leave her a voicemail, she said. Well, that call went to voicemail.

Hey, it's me... Answer your cell. Please let me know where you are, I want to explain everything.

    Back at the Galleria

Finally, Mom just made her long awaited purchase. As she walked out of the store, her cell phone rang. With two bags full of gifts in hand, she stopped to dig for her cell phone. The screen displayed Jo (me) calling. She pushed the button and placed her

cell between her ear and shoulder, Hey honey! she answered.

Hello? Is this the parent or guardian of Jolene Pierce? a deep male voice asked. Who's this?

This is Officer Jacobs. I'm with L.A.P.D. Are you the parent or guardian of Jolene Pierce?

    I am her mother-

I'm sorry to have to inform you of your daughter. She had been in an accident, he said. Mom dropped her bags in disbelief as she repositioned her cell phone against her ear. What! Oh God- Is she hurt? Please tell me she's alive!

    In the Late Afternoon

Both Mom and Dad sat anxiously in the waiting room of the City of Saints Hospital. Kevin walked in.

I got here as fast as I could.  How is she? he asked. Tiny beads of sweat started trickling down from his hair-line.

We haven't heard yet, Dad said. They greeted each other with hugs. It was just a few minutes later when Olivia showed up.

How is she? she asked, giving Mom a hug.

All we know is, she is unconscious, Mom tearfully answered. It was then, Dr. Carlisle came into the room with my chart.

Mr. and Mrs. Pierce? I'm Dr. Carlisle. As you know, Jolene had been in a serious accident caused by a lightning flash. She took a hard fall to the ground, causing a concussion and went into cardiac arrest, he stated. Kevin's breathing suddenly became a little heavy. His brows weighed over his big eyes. Mom comforted him.

We were able to resuscitate her. As of now, she remains unresponsive and is dependent on a respirator- A respirator? Dad asked. Mom turned to Dad and buried her head into his chest as he held her close, while Olivia's eyes bulged in disbelief.

There's quite a bit of swelling in her brain tissue. I will show you her CT scan results along with the x- rays soon, he continued.

    About 40 minutes later...

After Dr. Carlisle went over the CT scan results, he grabbed the x-rays and held them up against the light board.

In this area here, he circled, you can see her left arm has a minor fracture of the radius. Luckily, the injury isn't too close to the distal radial-ulnar joint, he pointed. Olivia made eye contact with Kevin, motioning with her hand for him to inhale, exhale. Kevin took in a deep breath and slowly exhaled. "We'll have to do what is called: a volar plate fixation. She has some third-degree burns on her wrist here..."

    Moments Later

Unfortunately, most coma patients will have to go through some type of rehabilitation. Dr. Carlisle confirmed. I have a question, will she remember anything? Kevin asked.

Most likely in these rare cases, the surge causes a blackout in patients and they usually don't remember anything...

There was a moment of silence as they sat there. Any other questions or concerns I can help you with? Dr. Carlisle asked.

When can we see her? Dad asked. As soon as the unit is clear, I will escort you in. Two at a time, ten minutes each, he told them.

    In the Waiting Room

About an hour later, the nurse came into the room with my personal things; such as a few silver filigree bracelets, the burnt hooded top, t-shirt, jeans, shoes and my purse in a plastic bag.

Mr. and Mrs. Pierce, here are her belongings. The nurse handed the bag over.

Thank you. Dad said. Mom took the bag.

As soon as the nurse left, they inspected the hooded top; with its burn-hole marks. Kevin and Olivia glanced at each other. It wasn't long before the lingering burnt odor would be smelled by all of them.

Through My Eyes in Another Form

    On the Borderline

It was later in the afternoon, and they were waiting to see me. In the Intensive Care Unit, my body was laid in bed, while a white orb moved around the room. I opened my astral eyes, realizing I was in a medical facility; hooked up to machines. Freaked, I ripped the tubes, IV and unhooked myself from the breathing machine.

I felt pain throughout my body, but ignored the source of it. Then, I peeked under the bandage that wrapped my arm. I gasped. Seeing the burns frightened the hell out of me. Suddenly, a Tasmanian-like vortex (with the light in its core)

appeared from above the ceilingless room and followed me. As soon as I saw it, I moved away from it as fast as I could, by getting out of my hospital bed. I hid under it. It moved away quickly and disappeared before my eyes. I looked straight ahead and saw a doctor with Mom, Dad, Kevin and Olivia through a clear glass window of the unit.

As I got up slowly, I felt a lingering pain. I waved my hand to get their attention, but there was no response from any of them. I walked up to the window slowly and knocked on it. Still, no response. Anger set in since they were ignoring me. Even when I screamed and banged on that glass, nothing.  After I had it out on the glass window for a moment, I took a deep breath to calm myself. As I exhaled, I heard a soothing, yet strong voice.

No. I'm afraid that's not going to work. This voice was somewhat familiar. I paused, then slowly turned my head to my left. Standing, was a youthful and beautiful Native American woman. She had the usual reddish-brown skin and long black hair.

Whoa, who are you? You look familiar.  Wait- Why are they ignoring me?  I continued banging on the glass, looking at them.

It's like they don't see me! The Native  looked away, looked at my laying body and then me in the eyes.

Why don't you turn around and look for yourself, she suggested. At that moment, Dr. Carlisle opened the door and led them in. Olivia tactfully covered her nose as that faint burnt odor was acknowledged by them.

I'll go ahead and leave you all with her, but this is the only time I can do this. Ten minutes max, said Dr. Carlisle.  He left the unit.

I watched, slowly following them along. That's when I realized my gut was right, I was outside of my body. They came up to my bedside and looked at me in a coma. In spirit, I was beside them, staring at my own body. I felt my eyes nearly pop out of their sockets. I took a deep breath and a couple of steps back.

Of course they didn't see me, I thought to myself. Dad pulled Mom close to him as she teared up again. His eyes watered. It was obvious, Dad was trying to stay strong for her.

Strangely, being right next to Olivia, I was able to hear her thoughts; they were loud enough.

Oh God, this is really bad, she thought.

I just can't believe this... Kevin muttered. He put his hand on my dad's shoulder.

Claire, David, anything you need, just know I'm here, he assured them.

Olivia turned to them, Anything! she said, confirming her loyalty as my best friend. I watched closely as Olivia hugged Mom, and thought about both of their remarks, while the Native woman shook her head at the unfortunate situation. It was an awkward moment and I couldn't figure out why; entirely.

I'm feeling really confused right now- Oh, my head hurts! I complained.

I observed closely at the machine, tubes, and IV I could have sworn I'd just taken off. I came in real

close to my face, tempted to touch it with my fingers. Instead, I suddenly turned to the Native woman.

What happened to me? I compared my body to my soul. Oh my- damn near hyperventilating, am I? I asked, subtlety.  The Native woman took a look below my sternum (solar plexus).

Yes, she said, thinking quickly, no! Kind of... she was guessing. Look, it's complicated, we need to go!

She pulled me away from my body, "Now! We can't have you hanging around like this!" she sternly said. I forcefully stood there, reluctant to move.

What are you talking about! I can't leave! What about them? I pleaded.

"They're going to be fine. We need to take care of you right now. Let's get you checked in." She grabbed my arm and walked me to the door. I looked back at my resting body.

She stopped and then sighed out of frustration.

Okay, I'm ready... I lied. She began walking out, but I remained still. She stopped again.

Come on! she stressed. I took a last look in the room and left with her. In the hall, when we began walking, an old male spirit in his hospital gown passed us by. His eyes locked with mine eerily, while the Native woman suddenly stopped in her tracks. I finally looked away from him. I turned to her, What? I asked.

We forgot your chart, she realized. She turned around and walked back and I followed.

Chart? What chart? Your medical chart, she said.

Why do you need my medical chart?

Trust me, this makes it all much easier. She looked at me.

"Still confused huh? Okay, really quickly, let's just say there are two types of charts. Your A chart is a record of all things your soul has experienced: deeds good and bad, anything significant throughout your entire existence.
