The Authenticity Code - Dr. Sharon Lamm-Hartman
Introduction
HAVE YOU EVER been spellbound?
By that, I mean, have you ever been so drawn in by someone’s ideas, communication skills, words, gestures, facial expressions— their presence—that you couldn’t take your eyes, or ears, off what they were doing right in front of you?
This has happened to me. More than once. In fact, lots of times. I have been wowed by some of the most remarkable, well-known speakers of all time—Zig Ziglar, Brené Brown, General Colin Powell, Madeleine Albright, and many others.
I’ve also been impressed beyond words by watching and listening to several relatively unknown presenters such as Dr. Fariba Amidari, Jade Simmons, and Akeem Iman-Jones.
On the other hand, I have been in situations where I have had to listen to long, boring, unappealing presentations by some of the worst speakers ever. Completely untrained, uninformed, or unprepared. I felt as though my time had been wasted. (Obviously, I won’t call them out by name!)
The fact is, we are always presenting ourselves, whether through formal pitches, informal communications, or interviews for a promotion or an entirely new job.
What is the difference between the outstanding, the good, the bad, and the downright dreadful?
There are so many defining factors that even this book—a book focused on professional presence, presentation, and authenticity—can’t bring them all to the forefront. But it does offer a solid beginning.
A few of the elements that easily make or break presenters include the following:
• Sincerity: People can easily tell the difference between fake
and real.
• Preparation: Always do the homework!
• Content: Is it relevant to the audience and the listener’s needs?
• Finishing strong: Is there a clear call to action? Are the decision makers motivated to do something?
• Image and appearance: It’s important to look the part.
• Owning
the environment: Skilled presenters take charge of the room or interview setting.
• Becoming your authentic brand
: This is what earns trust!
Again, most people can immediately spot a fake
or phony.
• Accepting and dealing with feedback and questions: Does the presenter truly try to meet needs, without getting defensive?
For more than 25 years, I have been focused on helping executives and professionals discover and refine their presence and formal and informal presentation skills. Achieving that end helps them reach desired business results, gain promotions, get the job they need and want, achieve their desired level of personal and professional success, and build unwavering confidence.
Through my company, Inside-Out Learning, Inc. (IOL), my team and I have presented one-hour to five-day versions of my course, Authentic Presence and Presentation Skills (or APPS), to a vast number of Fortune 500 and Inc. 1000 companies, along with small to midsize businesses, nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions. We have also presented virtual and digital modules of our APPS program, and we now have a new app that anyone can use from their cell phones to strengthen their authentic presence and presentation skills. Without exception, the response has been astonishingly positive. The course has propelled participants to unimagined new heights in their careers, sales, and business results, as well as their personal lives. In fact, one of my Fortune 50 clients has offered the training to more than 2,000 key leaders and professionals.
The name of the original program I designed was IOL’s Executive Presence and Presentation Skills Program. However, as we interviewed hundreds of program graduates and asked them what they most received from the program, they said, I connected with the true me, my authentic presence.
Many said that before the program, they tried to be someone they were not, and were trying to fake it to make it.
During the program they found confidence in who they truly are as a leader or professional, as well as who they are becoming. They also became more service-minded and realized they must interact with their audience and tailor their message and presence to their audience in order to be of maximum service to their listeners. The Authenticity Code™ helped them unravel the art and science of success.
Of course, you may be asking, How can you prove your claims?
I believe that the proof is evident in four measures:
1.How do participants evaluate the course when it is over? Our average score across thousands of participants on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being exceptional, is 4.9. Most program participants say that the program is the best they have ever taken.
2.How successful are our participants over the long term after they have gone through the training? About 50 to 80 percent of participants are promoted or land their ideal job within one year of attending the program, and many say they could not have achieved that promotion without applying what they learned in the program. Companies also experience a 90 percent retention rate of participants who go through our three- and five-day programs. The participants feel motivated, inspired, and valued—which encourages them to stay with the company. Our entrepreneur participants take their companies to a completely new level of success and build their ideal
