Introduction
Theatre is a tremendously powerful vehicle for social change. Why? Because it takes place in real time with a live audience who actively participate in the collective experience of creating a make-believe world. Theatre does not describe, theorize about, take pictures of, or outline steps for achieving a different reality. It brings that reality to life in real time and real space, and audiences who are present in the room for that hour or two will carry away a living memory of that alternative world. And the power of a lived memory cannot be over-estimated.
I recently produced a Zoom reading of two social change plays, Head in the Game and The Intimacy Coordinator. These are both plays that support the abolition of prostitution, advocating for immediate adoption of the Nordic model. The reading was followed by a talkback with Dr. Melissa Farley, founder and director of the non-profit organization, Prostitution Research and Education. Both plays present models that confront audiences with the contradictions, disconnects, false assumptions, and denials that support the liberal lies that prostitution is a legitimate and even empowering career choice.
